Meet Liezel Rubin

We were lucky to catch up with Liezel Rubin recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Liezel with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I got my work ethic from my parents. I started working by choice at a very early age. Officially at 15 I got my first job. My parents were Holocaust survivors and overcame unfortunate circumstances and grew to flourish. My father was a rocket scientist designed many top secret projects for the US Government. He taught us to work hard, be on time and always come with a can do attitude. This has taken me far in life for sure. I continue to work hard and create art that I can be proud of and that makes my customers come back for more. I found that as I mastered an artistic craft/expression, I would always find another mountain to climb and conquer… it’s always good to have multiple means of income and it really keeps the creative juices fresh and flowing if I can do many different forms of expression. Whether is be photography, graphic design, fine art, puppeteering, photo editing, video editing or any of my other creative endeavors, I love to create!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am currently working on several endeavors. I create personal puppet video messages through my www.puppet-gram.com website. I also create fresh and forward graphic design and photography through my www.graphXperts.com website. This is where I create branding for other companies and advertising materials as well as design custom websites that I send to a developer to code. I have worked in direct mail and advertising for over 30 years. Initially I worked creating political campaigns and automotive direct mail. Eventually I expanded into all markets creating for a much wider range of advertisers. You name the industry, and I have probably done some art for it at some point. In addition, this allows me to have time to create my own fine art that I have shown in art galleries all over the world.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

One quality that has been the best lesson in life is adaptability and my ability to pivot and create new skills for myself to add to my artistic arsenal. Videography and video editing was one of those later skills that I have grown to love doing. I guess after 30 years of working on creative mac programs, learning a new program that involves another form of art is pretty familiar to the previous programs I have used for other assets. SO the leaning curve was pretty straight forward and easy for me.

Another quality I would say has impacted my journey has to be my ability to get the job done and not procrastinate and put things off. This is essential when you have clients dealing with deadlines. In the political campaign direct mail industry, immediate is essential. These jobs are always rush jobs and generally need to be out to print within 82 hours and sometimes even 24 hours of receiving.

My third quality I think I have for what I do is insight. I generally can nail what a client is looking for in their print advertising. I think I am a very visual person and am intensely creative in my process.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

I like clients that like to represent themselves with style and class. I like to make clients look like they put a good amount of time and effort into how they represent their brand or company. I love when a client trusts me to create something spectacular for them.
