We were lucky to catch up with Elana Thimm recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Elana, really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?
When I got laid off in November I was taken totally by surprise. I was upset but there was also a huge sense of relief within me. Which is because I had been thinking about leaving my job for awhile as I was feeling uninspired and bored. So a part of me was happy that this gave me the chance to move on and find something new. I kind of just kept telling myself that this was a push that I needed to make a change in my life for the better. I also was happy about being able to relax for a bit and focus on putting more energy into my hobbies.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
With my newfound free time I am working on getting more freelance photography and content creation gigs. I would love to get to the point where I have consistent clients and can make this my full time work. I’m interested in helping businesses in Savannah with their social media accounts. My skillset is perfect for this because of my photo/video, editing, design, and social media experience.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One quality would be my resilience. When things don’t work out a certain way it’s easy to feel defeated and not want to continue. But those are the moments it’s important to push on. If you keep showing up, life will reward you. Another would be my passion for photo/content creation. You know the feeling of when you get to do something you really like to do vs something that feels like work. Having passion and a desire to work hard at the thing you want to be successful at is so important. And lastly my technical skills when it comes to cameras and editing software. I started editing video at an early age with Windows Movie Maker and then just kept upgrading equipment and software. My advice would be to always stay on top of current equipment and softwares as best you can as they are always changing and improving. Also PRACTICE. There have been a lot of stints of time where I didn’t use my camera much and it definitely feels more difficult trying to get back into after awhile. If you are consistent with practicing you’re only going to get better faster.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes! I would love to work with really anyone looking for photos or content. I’m interested in creative portraits so I would love to work with models on some fun creatively styled shoots. I’m also open to shooting seniors, proposals, bachelorette parties, couples and pets. Also if you own/run a business in Savannah I would love to create content for your social media. I offer different packages that you can choose from based on your budget. You can get in touch with me by email elanathimm@gmail.com and see some of my work on my media instagram @elanatmedia.
