We were lucky to catch up with Zorin McGuire recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Zorin with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I believe every one has something unique to say. Being able to hear that at the end of a project, working with an artist and helping find their voice and way they want to say what they have to say is the best reward. Sometimes it’s a lot of work, we will put time and effort into an idea and it might not be it, so we pivot. Growing up I had a front row seat to what it means to have a strong work ethic. I watched my mother start at the front desk of a huge company and work her way to the top becoming a Vice President. She taught me how to keep going when it’s hard despite set backs. She showed me that success doesn’t come overnight, but through the daily grind and having a true passion for what you’re doing. I think that comes out really strong in my producing.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I began my professional career as a musician traveling worldwide playing all kinds of genres for many different artists. Live music turned into me being able to sit in rooms where songs were being written and produced. These experiences shaped the way I produce, write songs and work with artists today. I know from experience what makes a song connect with an audience and I’ve seen how music can move people in small dive bars to large arenas. For me, it’s not just about finding a cool sound or beat, but how an artist will be able to share their unique voice and story.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Learn to enjoy the day to day work. Don’t create music for an audience, create music based on what you stand for and how you see the world. Failure and refinement is the difference between good and great. When I look back on the experiences that shaped me the most, it was either experiences of failure or of me doing something right but wondering how I could make it even better.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking for people that stand for something or have something they want to say through their music. I would love to collaborate and bring out something creative you can be proud of and feel confident about.
