We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelly Magouirk a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Honestly, it’s still a work in progress. I’ve been through therapy, overcome an eating disorder, and done a lot of deep personal work to get where I am today. Being in the beauty industry can be especially tough—you’re surrounded by high standards, constant comparison, and a lot of pressure to always “look the part.” But over time, I’ve learned to be kinder to myself. Confidence, for me, hasn’t come from perfection—it’s come from choosing to show up as I am, even when it feels vulnerable.
Every day, I try to remind myself that my value isn’t in how I look, but in how I love, lead, and lift others up. Helping people feel good in their own skin—especially those dealing with hair loss—has helped me heal, too.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At Erin Kelly Salons in Keller, Texas, I specialize in non-surgical hair replacement—think hair toppers, toupees, and Halo Couture extensions—for women and men experiencing thinning hair or hair loss. Our salon is just outside the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, and we’ve built a reputation for creating natural-looking, wearable solutions that restore confidence and self-esteem.
What makes our work special is that it’s not just about hair—it’s about helping people feel like themselves again. Many of our clients are women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s who’ve quietly struggled with thinning hair for years. Others are men looking for a toupee that looks realistic and feels breathable. Whether it’s due to menopause, stress, medical treatments, or aging, hair loss is deeply personal—and we meet that with compassion, expertise, and no-pressure guidance.
We walk clients through a customized consultation where we color-match the hair piece, tailor the cut and style, and teach them how to care for it at home. It’s a full-circle transformation—emotionally and physically.
We’re focused right now on building a strong foundation—earning the trust of our clients, growing our reputation in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and continuing to refine what we do best: helping people feel confident in their hair again. We’d love to continue to grow and are open to whatever expansion opportunities the future brings, but our priority will always be creating a welcoming, expert space for anyone navigating hair loss.
You don’t have to live with hair you hate. If you’re searching for a trusted stylist in DFW who truly understands hair loss—we’re here, and we’d be honored to help.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first would be a commitment to excellence—not perfection. I’ve spent over 20 years honing my craft—especially in color theory and cutting techniques—and I still walk into every appointment with the mindset of learning and improving. That skillset is what allows me to take something like a hair topper or toupee (which can look unrealistic straight out of the box) and transform it into something natural and beautiful. Every piece needs to be cut specifically for the client’s face shape, lifestyle, and hair texture. That kind of artistry only comes from years of paying attention to the little things—angles, tones, density, movement.
Second, professionalism. It’s often overlooked in creative fields like hairstyling, but it’s one of the main reasons clients continue to trust me. I make it a point to be early to every appointment so I’m calm, prepared, and ready to welcome my client—rather than rushing in with them. I keep the space clean and inviting because the environment matters just as much as the service. And even if I’ve been doing someone’s hair for 20 years, I still ask, “How’s your hair feeling?” That one question opens the door for feedback, change, or deeper connection. It’s those small, consistent moments of care that build lasting trust.
And third, paying attention to the little things. Whether it’s blending a highlight, adjusting a part line on a topper, or noticing a shift in a client’s energy—those small observations make a big difference in someone’s experience. I don’t want to just give someone great hair; I want them to feel seen, understood, and cared for.
For someone early in their journey, my advice is: clients might forget how you did their hair, but they will never forget how you made them feel. Stay curious, stay consistent, and never stop refining your craft. Excellence comes from repetition, humility, and care—not overnight success.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Without question—my business partner, Chelsea. She’s not just my co-owner; she’s the reason I’ve been able to grow into this next phase of my career. As our business manager, Chelsea brings structure, vision, and strategy to everything we do. She believes in what we’re building, holds us to a standard of excellence, and balances my creative side with a grounded, thoughtful approach to growth.
Running a salon is so much more than doing great hair—it’s building systems, creating a culture, managing finances, and planning for the future. I couldn’t do that alone. Having Chelsea by my side has helped me become a better leader, a better communicator, and ultimately a better stylist. Erin Kelly Salons wouldn’t be what it is without both of us in it.
