We recently connected with Madalyn Harr and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Madalyn, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
When imposter syndrome first affected me, I had to take a step back and take a look at the hard facts of what I had accomplished and am currently accomplishing in my professional work. It became tempting to believe that I didn’t have enough experience, education, or skill to do my work well.
Even though I had all three of those qualities and was currently doing the work, it was hard not to compare myself with other people further along in their professional career. I had believed that my career had to stay on a singular linear path in order to get to a certain destination.
When I noticed it began holding me back from saying “yes” to the tasks, events, work, etc. that interested me, I began noticing the problem. I thought that I couldn’t do those things because I hadn’t had the standard years of experience journey that others had already gone through.
Those around me encouraged me in my abilities and, after reflection, I finally had the realization that I am qualified for the work that I am doing and that the only one holding me back was me.
Now, whenever those thoughts start to creep back in, I remind myself that imposter syndrome is not the truth and that dwelling on those thoughts is only going to hold me back. I replace the inadequate lies with the truth that I have been gifted abilities for the benefits of others and holding them back does no one any good.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I classify myself as an all-around creative. More specifically, I am a marketer, designer, photographer, and blogger.
I own the creative agency M Creative Co. which specializes in design, marketing, and administrative support for small businesses in San Antonio, TX and beyond. Launched in the beginning of 2023, M Creative Co. has helped 12+ small businesses and organizations across the nation in launching, expanding, and sustaining their design and marketing presence, online and off.
My photography career began in June 2020 when I launched Madalyn Dobbs Photography (now Madalyn Harr Photography). I have had the privilege of photographing countless individuals, families, and events throughout memorable milestones in my clients’ lives. It’s always been a joy of mine to capture memories in photographs to reminisce on, years later.
I launched my blog, My Life as Madalyn, in June of 2015. It has gone through active and inactive periods over the years but it has been the place where I share about my life, faith, and everything in between. Though it previously was a more professional endeavor, it has since become a more casual hobby.
My other creative experiences include social media and marketing support for other creative agencies, virtual assistance, creative work in Christian ministry, and digital and physical product design. I also owned the e-commerce boutique Adorned With Delight from 2017-2021 that sold digital and physical Christian gifts, apparel, and jewelry.
I have always had an entrepreneurial mindset and I’ve enjoyed seeing different projects come to life over the years. I find my creative endeavors exciting as there is always something different going on. The main focus throughout all my projects has been fostering a community that supports positive, meaningful, and Kingdom-focused lives through creativity, communication, and service to others.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Communication, creativity, and organization have been most impactful on my journey. Communication is essential to build thriving relationships. Creativity and organization are essential to making an idea come to life sustainably.
My advice for exercising these qualities (and what helped me in my journey) is to learn, yes, but get real-life experience as well. Put yourself in situations where these qualities are required and you’ll be on your way to exercising the muscle. Repeated intentional practice often makes the process easier and more natural as time goes on.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
I have been blessed with the best parents. They have loved so well and have encouraged my siblings and I in all areas of life. They have encouraged us to live a life of faith, love, and service to others with strength, resilience, and confidence from the Lord. They have taught us lessons from their own life experiences and have always wanted the best for us. Because of them, I have been given the keys to a successful life no matter what I am doing: love God and love others.
