We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Sofia Adams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Sofia, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
From an early age, I believe God planted seeds that would one day grow into a calling to become a naturopathic doctor. As a child, I felt a deep connection with nature. I was raised to believe that God provided everything we need not only to survive but to thrive—including the tools to heal ourselves. Growing up in a small town in Iowa with a large Amish population, I was surrounded by natural living. The local Amish-run grocery stores carried fresh produce and natural remedies like tinctures and supplements, shaping my early exposure to holistic wellness.
I was a healthy child for most of my life, but at age 14, I began experiencing daily heartburn. After extensive testing, my results came back normal. The conventional solution was a medication with harsh side effects, something my mother was hesitant for me to take indefinitely. Instead, she sought out a homeopath who recommended an individualized remedy tailored to my mental, emotional, and physical symptoms. Within one month, my heartburn was gone and I no longer have to take anything for my digestion. That was my first experience with the transformative power of holistic healing.
That moment sparked a deep curiosity within me. I entered college with a passion for helping others and a desire to teach, though I wasn’t yet sure where God was leading me. During college, I struggled with anxiety and depression. Once again, I turned to the same homeopath. After just one month of treatment, my motivation returned, my outlook brightened, and I felt more equipped to handle life’s stressors. A few years later, when I developed widespread eczema, I again found healing through natural therapies. Each of these experiences reaffirmed what I felt God was gently revealing to me all along: this path of holistic healing was my calling.
After earning my undergraduate degree in Health & Human Physiology with a focus in Health Studies from The University of Iowa, I was accepted into medical school at National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois, to pursue my Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree. What sustained me through the challenges of four years of rigorous medical training was a verse from Revelation 22:2: “….the leaves of the Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations.” Because of my story and the incredible healing I received, I knew this verse to be true– God has provided us everything we need to be able to heal.
I chose naturopathic medicine because it beautifully blends the wisdom of traditional healing with modern science and evidence-based practices. At its core is a belief I hold deeply: when we create the right conditions for health, the body’s God-given, self-healing power is activated. That vital force lives in each of us, and it is my purpose and passion to help others awaken and restore it so that they can live out their purpose and passions with ease, not dis-ease.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
After completing medical school, two years of clinical rotations, and an externship in the Chicago suburbs with medical doctors specializing in homeopathy, I returned to Iowa and launched Vale of Health—a virtual holistic consulting practice.
To make my services more accessible and welcoming, I offer a free 15-minute Discovery Call for prospective clients who are curious about how naturopathic medicine can support their health goals. One of the greatest blessings of running a virtual practice is the ability to serve individuals and families not just in my local Iowa community, but across the entire United States. I currently offer two virtual 1-on-1 consultation options:
1. Naturopathic Health Evaluation – A comprehensive 2-3 hour session where I conduct an in-depth assessment of your health and create a fully individualized care plan. This may include recommendations from a variety of naturopathic modalities such as homeopathy, phytotherapy (herbal medicine), hydrotherapy, lifestyle counseling, and nutraceutical support.
2. Flower Essence Consultation – A 90-minute session focused specifically on mental and emotional wellness. Based on your unique psychosomatic profile, I craft a personalized flower essence blend to support your emotional balance.
As part of my practice, I provide access to Fullscript, a professional online dispensary. This allows clients to conveniently receive their recommended remedies, supplements, and wellness products delivered directly to their doorsteps.
After several years of working with clients facing a wide range of health concerns, I was inspired to create my own line of botanical and homeopathic products, handcrafted on my farm in Iowa. These therapeutic formulated blends address basic common concerns—such as flower essence blends for restful sleep, soothing salves for minor skin irritations, or calming teas to ease daily stress. Each item I create is made to order, ensuring maximum freshness and crafted with care and intention.
Besides my 1-on-1 consultations and phytotherapy shop, I also offer courses on my website—continuously expanding the library as part of my mission to empower individuals with the knowledge to confidently use everyday natural remedies for themselves and their families.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1) Driven by Faith.
My journey has been led by prayer and shaped by divinely orchestrated opportunities. Without God’s guidance, I wouldn’t be where I am today with a virtual practice that allows me to serve others through holistic healing. Faith has been the foundation of every step I’ve taken.
Advice: prioritize being present— allowing space to recognize the divine nudges. We pray for clarity. We pray for wisdom. We pray for patience. We pray for endurance to run the good race.
2) Dedication to learning.
From the moment I felt called to help others heal through God’s medicine, I knew it would require dedication. That drive carried me through the challenges of medical school and continues to fuel my growth as a doctor. My commitment to learning ensures I can show up as the best possible resource for my clients.
Advice: keep being curious AND humble. Nobody likes to talk to someone that thinks they know everything… ask questions, seek mentors or internship opportunities, and don’t let fear hold you back from an experience to grow.
3) Empathy and Awareness.
To uncover the true root cause of my clients’ symptoms, I approach each visit with grace, empathy, and full presence. Even subtle mannerisms can offer valuable insight into which remedy is most appropriate. Every aspect of a person—their mental, emotional, and physical state—must be considered to create the most effective, individualized healing plan.
Advice: observe without judgement, watch without reacting, and listen without responding. We live in a world where opinions divide us and empathy is becoming rare. True healing begins when we hold space for others without needing to fix, defend, or impose. Start training to become a compassionate and calm observer— allowing you to notice subtle shifts, cues, and unspoken needs.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Nature truly is medicine. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I step outside—rain or shine—for fresh air and movement. Even walking in the rain has therapeutic benefits; research shows it can positively influence brain chemistry and regulate the autonomic nervous system, helping to counter feelings of stress.
When the overwhelm is intense, I take time to reflect and identify its root. Am I feeling this way because I overextended myself or failed to plan effectively? Or is it the result of something unexpected—an external event that shocked my system and was out of my control? If it’s the latter, I often turn to homeopathic remedies or flower essences. These tools gently support my nervous system, helping me restore clarity, motivation, and inner peace.
