We recently connected with Jelly Rose and have shared our conversation below.
Jelly, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I think in a sense my purpose kind of found me. I started singing in my grandfather’s church when I was just four years old with my four older brothers. While they hated being in the spotlight, I thrived in it. The lights, the people, the attention, their reactions to me- I loved every second of it. So as I got older, it started to become less about how people responded to me being on stage, and more about how I felt being there. My connection to the music became my greatest gift. If I was connected to it, then that connection would spill over and I could really make my audience think and feel through me. So my gift made space for me in any place that I would go, and I was comfortable with that. Never doubting that my music would speak for me. It would take people on a journey and I watched it with my own eyes. It became undeniable what my purpose is. It’s not about fame or clout or notoriety. It’s just about giving the people the music, and letting it speak for itself.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Jelly Rose, and I am singer/songwriter/performer from Olathe, Kansas. My band and I create all original music. From beginning to end, every part of it is curated by us. From the music, to the storytelling, to the vocals, to the delivery. Which is special because we are a throwback to a time when bands worked together to create art. To put it simply, I am an analog artist in a digital world. Our music creation is completely organic, and the catalyst for it stems from somewhere beyond me. It is music for the heart, mind, and soul. I strive to be as authentic as possible, and stay true to who I am, no matter who sees the vision or not. The name of my first EP was Unclassified. It was titled that because that is who we are at our core. There is no box that we fit into, no category, no genre. Jelly Rose is an entity in and of itself. And that is special. Currently, we are recoding our first album. It will give listeners an opportunity to really see the depth of the band we are and the artist I am. They’ll be able to dance, cry, vibe, or just sing their hearts out. I am so looking forward to being able to give people the full Jelly Rose experience.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that were most impactful in my journey was learning the concept of humility, teamwork, and confidence. I can’t tell you the amount of no’s I have received throughout my career. I auditioned for X-Factor when I was probably 10 or 11. Didn’t even make it to see the judges, and even worse my grandpa made fun of me for it. In the moment it hurt, but looking back on it I think he was preparing me for the fact that I am not every one’s cup of tea. I am an acquired taste, and the sooner you can accept that not every door is going to be the right one for you, the more you become comfortable in your skin and being who you are. The failures build character, and humble you enough to see what makes you special and not seek to be someone that is palatable to everyone.
Teamwork has been so important in my journey. They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, it takes a village to build a brand and to create art. Find the beauty and benefit of having diverse people and opinions around you. Especially in the music industry. I can’t imagine if it was only my ears that created my music. It would become stale, boring even. You need a team of people who see the vision and are willing to push you past your expectations. They see the greatness in you, and sometimes when those failures arise, you need someone to encourage you and remind you of exactly who you are.
Finally, confidence. It seems like an obvious answer, but when you are building a career in front of the world, it is very easy to take other peoples opinions and criticisms to heart. You start second guessing yourself, questioning if people will be receptive to you or even acknowledge you. But, you have to remember what makes you special. There is only one you, and you should be proud of that. Walk in any room like you own it, and know you belong there. Because you do.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes! I am always looking to collaborate with other artists and brands. Specifically, producers, musicians, dancers, sound technicians, singers, even other bands. The whole nine! Our goal is to keep evolving and developing our sound and collaboration is so important in order to do that. In an ideal world, we would love to put together a tour with other artists and bands, so if you are looking to collaborate you can definitely reach out to me or my management and follow my journey on social media. My music is also available to stream on all platforms!
