We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Babak Hajhosseini a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Babak, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I learned early on that life, while undeniably beautiful, can also be harsh and deeply challenging. That realization shaped the way I view purpose. To me, the only thing that could truly justify the weight of suffering and struggle is to do something meaningful—something extraordinary—with the life we’re given. Over time, I came to understand that this kind of fulfillment doesn’t come from external comparisons or chasing someone else’s definition of success. It comes from the quiet, daily effort to live up to your own highest potential. I believe in measuring progress by looking inward—comparing myself only to who I was yesterday, a week ago, a year ago—and striving, always, to grow. When you commit to that kind of personal evolution, everything slowly begins to make sense.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a physician-scientist and a wound healing specialist. I am the President and CEO of Wound and Burn Centers of America. My training background is in general surgery and plastic surgery, but I am also one of the handful of physicians in the nation to have completed academic fellowship training in both complex wounds as well as burn injuries, and the only one who has completed his training at a prestigious institution like Stanford University and gone on to lead the world’s leading provider of wound healing services.
Our practice is dedicated to caring for patients with complex, non-healing wounds and burn injuries—many of whom have already undergone extensive treatment from various specialists without success. These patients are often referred to us from leading academic medical centers such as UCLA and Cedars-Sinai, as well as from community physicians across Southern California. They come to us because of the reputation we’ve built for delivering results where others could not—for healing even the most challenging wounds.
What makes this work so meaningful to me is the opportunity to restore hope to people who have often exhausted every other option. It’s a privilege to do this work, and I’m committed to advancing the field through innovation, education, and compassionate care.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Pick something that is truly unique. Find a niche where you can create meaningful impact and offer something of real value to a large population. Then devote countless hours—days, years—mastering your craft until there is no one else in the world who can do what you do better. That’s how you make a lasting impact. That’s how you find meaning in this challenging life.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The biggest challenge in the field of wound healing is education—educating not only patients, their families, and caregivers, but also my own physician colleagues. There are numerous misconceptions surrounding wound healing and the many factors that can impair it. We’re working to overcome this challenge by continuously educating our patients and, more importantly, by establishing our own fellowship training program, where we train the next generation of wound healing specialists.
