Meet Susie Luo

We recently connected with Susie Luo and have shared our conversation below.

Susie, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I didn’t discover my goal all at once—it gradually became clear through continuous exploration, experimentation, and deep listening to myself.

In the beginning, I was simply drawn to certain sensations, visuals, and materials. They captivated me and compelled me to respond through creation. Over time, I came to realize that this wasn’t just a form of expression—it was a way of engaging in dialogue with myself and with the world around me.

One of the most defining aspects of my artistic journey has been the experience of flow—those moments during creation when I become completely absorbed, losing track of time and self-consciousness. In this state, I feel deeply connected, peaceful, and aligned. It’s as if my inner self merges with the process. That immersive experience has been a powerful affirmation that art is not only my language, but also my way of being.

So for me, finding my purpose has not been about making a single decision, but about slowly moving closer to my authentic self. And every time I enter that state of flow through art, I’m reminded that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am an artist primarily working in abstract painting and soft sculpture installations. My practice revolves around themes of emotion, bodily perception, and the subconscious, exploring how non-representational forms can convey intimate and often ineffable internal experiences.

In my abstract paintings, I work with layered textures and nuanced color relationships to express the fluidity of emotion and the subtle shifts in psychological states. My soft sculptures use textiles, stuffing materials, and pliable structures to build a sense of physical intimacy and tension between the body and space. These works often carry a tactile quality, inviting the viewer to feel rather than simply observe.

My art is not a replication of reality, but an ongoing dialogue between the self and the world. I am interested in how abstraction can hold and transmit personal experience, while also evoking resonance and connection in others on a deeply sensory and emotional level.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three qualities or skills that have influenced me the most are creativity, resilience, and empathy.

Creativity has allowed me to explore new ideas and express myself authentically through my art. It pushes me beyond boundaries and encourages innovation.

Resilience has helped me face challenges and setbacks with strength, teaching me to keep going even when things get tough, which is crucial in the artistic journey.

Empathy enables me to connect deeply with others’ experiences and emotions, enriching my work with genuine feeling and fostering meaningful communication through art.

Together, these qualities have shaped not only my artistic practice but also my personal growth.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

My parents have had a profound impact on me, primarily by giving me the freedom to explore and listen to my inner feelings. They encouraged me to focus on my authentic self—the “true me”—which laid the foundation for self-discovery. At the same time, they gently guided me towards my “higher self,” helping me develop greater self-awareness and a deeper sense of purpose.

Philosophically, they provided me with a framework for critical thinking and reflection, nurturing my curiosity and intellectual growth. What stands out most is their positive and optimistic outlook on life, which has deeply influenced me. Their attitude gives me strength and hope when facing challenges.

In essence, my parents have shaped not only how I think but also how I approach life, and their influence remains a steady source of support on my personal journey.
