Meet Kaitlyn Morrison

We were lucky to catch up with Kaitlyn Morrison recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaitlyn, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout

Burnout is something that is very real and almost everyone has experienced it to some capacity. for me I avoid burnout by being aware of my self and my ability. I had a goal of having one instagram post a day and I was getting burnt out because I felt like I HAD to make work for the post. it became less of a creation for me and more of a quota. For me. I decided that that goal was just not obtainable for me right now and made my goal simpler. Currently I make two posts a week and thats working for me because I can schedule out posts and it gives me time to have art ready! I avoid burnout by making art for me! I make what I want to make and I make (some) time to do things for me. If I spent every day doing a commission and only working for other people, I would get tired because im not doing things that necessarily make me happy. Do I get burnout from my day job? Yes. and thats something that I try to get around by being aware that it is my time and my life and im only going to give what im getting. I am also aware that sometimes I am just not in the mood to draw or paint and thats OK.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My name is Kaitlyn Morrison, I am A Native And African Artist and I created the brand TPC Artistry!
I make truly whatever I want to make. My art tends to be more spooky and creepy but its also sometimes Fun and silly! I work in almost any medium and I just love to create! I Make clothing that I would like to where and I am having a Blast selling my clothes on Etsy and My Website! I also have been focusing on tattoo design commissions! there are not many people out there like me so im happy to be able to create a fun alternative and sometimes silly clothing brand that the weirdos can enjoy. Im actively working on a few 1/1 sweaters that Im hand bleach painting along with floating the idea of a coloring book around! in the near future, im planing a Website overhaul as its starting to feel overcrowded to me and a new coat of paint Is always nice!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The number 1 thing that you have to do is BE YOU! If you feel like going out in a Christmas sweater on the 4th of July, Do it.
Knowing who you are and what you are comfortable with is SO important because it allows you to set boundaries and opens the door for more self discovery. It may be cheesy but your quality are the most important thing and by fully embracing those things(within reason) you can truly be, And create, the best version of your self and the most genuine art.

The second thing is to be ok with mistakes! one of my elementary teachers had me draw with only a sharpie. this meant that I had to work with any”mistakes” I made. this made me a better artist in so many ways. It is an easy gateway to create something from nothing and thats what creativity is all about.

The Third thing is just time. I am truly just beginning my main journey with art as a professional and I am still going to have to work my day job for many years to come. Its never going to be easy and I cant be upset with decisions Ive made that could have been better because they have been done. everything takes time and a Lot of it.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

To be honest my current challenge is shipping prices and knowing if im doing my website right. Im an artist, so tech stuff is not my strong point and im struggling a bit because I have to manually put in shipping costs from my website to match Printfull which is my manufacturers. I dont know what im doing, and thats ok! I dont have the funds to pay someone to help me right now so im slowly figuring it all out. running a business is Not easy but its rewarding when things work or someone buys something. Also Life is like the Biggest obstacle ever but its worth it.
