We were lucky to catch up with Yvonne Pointer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yvonne, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
On December 6, 1984, my fourteen year old daughter Gloria Pointer was brutally raped and murdered. On the day that her body was prepared for viewing, I vowed, standing over her casket, that I would find her killer and that he would apologize. It took me twenty-nine years before I came face-to-face with him. It was during those twenty-nine years that I found my purpose. To protect children from violence and to work with families who had been victimized.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Some might say that I wear many hats, but I would say that I am an activist who empowers individuals to become the solution that they seek. I spent many years, early after my daughter’s homicide, searching for someone to do something, only to become the person whom I sought after. I started a nonprofit women’s support group, Positive Plus, to help women overcome personal trauma through the support of each other. I founded a scholarship to help girls go to college who had been victimized by violence. Also I support a movement in Ghana in her memory
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities or skills are certainly faith, hope, and tenacity. The advice that I would give would be to surround yourselves with like minded individuals and have a strong faith based lifestyle
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
It is difficult to choose from the questions because I could choose them all, but I will choose the question about the book, and that would be, Victor Frankl’s Man Search For Meaning. The impact that it had on me was how he was able to use his mind, his thoughts, to transfer himself from the horrific life of imprisonment. He saw him self in a beautiful place despite his current conditions
