We were lucky to catch up with Mi’Juan Coleman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mi’Juan, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
It definitely found me. As a young girl interested in the arts I found myself drawn to more creative outlets such as art, drawing, dance and theater. In high school, I audition for musicals and dance team where I was able to express myself through performance and special FX make up. From supportive friends and teachers, I was able to dive into make up. Practicing prom looks and old age stage make up I knew I had found what makes my heart truly happy. Continuing my journey into college whether it be doing make up for the dance team or on students that attended the university I was able to practice my craft. Today I have had opportunities to do make up for head shots, weddings, and fashion week. As I’ve gone through my career, I find the same joy and excitement that I had back when I first started as a young girl even to this day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a makeup artist located in here in Austin, Texas.
My make up services include:
-Event
-Fashion
-Photo shoot
-Bridal
-Special FX
The most special thing about what I do is choosing to follow my dreams and staying on my journey. It’s been scary, exciting and challenging but I love every minute of it. With the beauty industry being as competitive as it is, for me it’s all about the passion. The thing that sets me apart from others is my creativity and spirit. When you leave my chair not only will you look better ( or worse if it special fx) you’ll feel better. We will laugh, glam and have a great time. Time is one of the most precious things we have so we have to find joy in every minute.
One of the greatest things about art is that it’s so versatile especially make up. Whether it be getting glam for work head shots or fashion week, I am continuously excited about being able to hone my craft in different areas. There are many artists who only specialize in one area of makeup, but I want to be a forever learner in this beautiful artistry.
Today I have continued honing my skills and education by pursuing my cosmetology license at the Paul Mitchell The School Austin. Where I graduate this upcoming July 2025.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that have been the most impactful on my journey, have been faith, practice and networking. I’ve learned everything from experience and practice. From building a professional kit, technique, networking and budgeting. But above all without God, I wouldn’t be anywhere. He has put me in every single room and giving me every opportunity to live out my dream.
To pass along a piece of advice that was given to me by my theater teacher Mr.Kennedy would say “practice makes permanent”. Continuously practicing your craft and honing the skills you want to learn will always be beneficial.
My advice to those who are early in their journey would be “a positive mindset is one of the best things you can always have!”. Whether your in a waiting or practice season keeping a positive mindset is going to be what makes or breaks how do you see your journey.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes of course! I am interested in collaborating with other artists, models, photographers and brands.
I am always open to networking with other artists to learn other techniques, skill sets, and art forms. Also to get to know the other artists in my area.
I also am interested in collaborating with any models and photographers. It is always amazing to get to know others and their work.
As well as any makeup brands to try all of the latest, greatest and new products. With the industry growing as rapidly as it is, it is always great to stay on top of the latest trends, make up styles and must have products.
