Meet Jennifer Andresen

We were lucky to catch up with Jennifer Andresen recently and have shared our conversation below.

Jennifer, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?

This is a unique question and I think I have something strong to contribute in this question. I have the unique story of I took a very very long break from Dj’ing from 2003 to 2021. I came back to a foreign world of club events and post pandemic dwindling crowds. I saw a lot of sensationalism and competitive aggressive behaviour and experienced a ton of backlash with regards to my “shock” at this new world I was trying to acclimate to. What I did is find ways to participate around and over the people whose sole goal was to have me fail and not succeed. I worked around it. I established my own lane. I mentored people who also struggled to get their foot in the door. I learned all the platforms of social media, every single loophole, all the tips and tricks and I worked those in such a way-I became increasingly successful in the focus areas and the content I wanted to put into the world. Everytime someone came at me, I stood my ground. I reiterated my message of anti-gatekeeping. I helped others up. I worked diligently on my skill set and created a fan base world wide rather than locally.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I mentor and coach budding artists in the areas of music I cover. Kind of life coaching, but more holistically thinking about mental health and balance while trying to reach your goals as an electronic music artist whether it be producer or dj or event planning.
I have live events where I am performing June 28 in San Antonio Texas.
I also stream live weekly at Twitch.tv/pinkii_usdnb
I am a part of Phreak Recordings

Locally I work with Malasuerte DNB in San Antonio, Eventide Collective in Houston TX, 3Kings Texas is my collective I run.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I had learned basic skills of djing on vinyl when I was in my first round of djing in the early 2000s. Learning how to use digital equipment-I thank many people for that help . I learned social media work and understanding and that continues to grow. Skillset on actual practice of djing I did on my own with countless hours of time devoted to getting good at it. Streaming work I have had many supporters in this process helping me learn the ropes it is a very supportive community and amazing place to input due to its accessibility for all to be able to enjoy music. For beginners in their journey my piece of advice is take it one step at a time a solid foundation will last longer than any overnight success or bought likes on a page you are developing. Organic growth and community building is absolutely the way to go. Be authentic and express yourself the way you want to not how anyone tells you it has to be. Find a mentor. It is so important.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed which happens often, I take a break. I take a nap. Grab my favorite snack. Listen to someone else play for a bit. Or watch documentaries online to think about something other than music. Good self care.
