Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Paul Twumasi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Paul, so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
Growing up in a small cocoa farming community of approximately 500 people in Ghana, I witnessed firsthand what real poverty and scarcity meant. Losing my mother at an early stage of my life also meant that I had to acquaint myself with the realities of life in a hard way.
Despite having barely what would sustain his family, my father had a heart that stretched beyond just his household. Aside from being an elder and a leader of the village, he had a genuine empathy that could also be expressed in the form of advice, motivation, and settling disputes. Watching and understudying him at the early stages of my life taught me that generosity and fulfillment are about how much of yourself you can offer, not how much you possess.
Again, I was forced to face the realities of life in a much deeper and stronger way when I was about 16 years old. For over a year, I became a street vendor to battle hunger, sustain myself, and save enough for senior high school. This helped me have an understanding of what many young people are going through on the streets today.
Then, divine found me when I met Mr. Emmanuel K. Frimpong, an English teacher in a senior high school, who had empathy for me due to his personal experiences, too. He paid my fees, fed me, and seamlessly integrated me into his family. Not only did this act of kindness change my life, but it also taught me that empathy can bring forth transformation.
These experiences have made me perfectly understand how it feels to be down, and have also given me a strong foundation to genuinely say to others going through difficulties that, “I see you, I understand you, I have been there before.”
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Having gone through the study abroad route, I have gained many experiences over the years, which I believe can help other people who want to follow suit and make this journey smoother and easier for them. With the help of other friends with similar experiences, I create free content and host live sessions on how people can study abroad for free or at a minimal cost. My content is mostly on TikTok and YouTube at Phila GH TV.
With the help of a few friends and sevispay.us, I have organized a competition called the P&F Contest. This contest, which costs nothing for people to participate in, focuses on helping high school graduates study and sit for the SAT Test. Winners for every month will be sponsored by my friends and me to register for the SAT Test. This contest kicks off on July 5, 2025.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience, empathy, and self-education are the three qualities that have been most impactful in my life.
For people who are early in this journey, my advice to you is that stay focused, dream big, and never forget to put together the pieces that can help model you become whoever you dream of.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Upon introducing the P&F Contest to help sponsor high school graduates, many university graduates who want to pursue a master’s level education have already proposed that we also bring one that will help them write the GRE and help their study abroad journey come to fruition.
I am currently looking for brands and individuals to partner with to help these graduates make their dreams a reality.
