We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Creel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi David, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
For years, I struggled with both confidence and self-esteem. My self-talk was also much less than ideal. I read a book by Ed Mylett called The Power of One More, and it greatly helped with all three areas. One of the main takeaways from that book was, “The key to self-confidence is keeping the promises you make to yourself.” Once I started doing that, everything changed. For example, let’s say you’re like me, and have hit the snooze button on your alarm at least once in your life (or at least once a day…lol). You can begin “keeping the promises you make to you” by getting up when the alarm goes off. I bought an old-school alarm clock, placed it across the room (which a, forced me to get up and b, I know there’s no way I can “accidentally” hit the snooze but and c, it’s not going to stop going off, until I turn it off. If you think about it, you don’t decide to get out of bed when the alarm goes off, you made that decision that night before when you set the alarm. So, this is your first chance of the day to begin to “keep the promises you make to yourself”. As Jim Kwik says, “How you do anything is how you do everything.” Start noticing when you ARE and ARE NOT keeping the promises to yourself, and see how it goes in regards to self-confidence and self-esteem.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
The best way for me to describe myself is by stating what I go over (at least) once a day, and have every single day since 1/1/23, it is called “My Document” and it’s who I am in the world:
I am an imperfect soldier for Christ.
I am salt and light.
I am forgiven.
I am a friend of the King of the Universe.
I am a created being in God’s image.
I am a husband first, a father second, and a coach third.
I am a great husband and father.
I am protecting of my family.
I am loyal.
I am a friend.
I am a giver.
I am happy.
I am prosperous.
I am peace.
I am gratitude.
I am grace, for others, and for myself.
I am only here for a little while, then the real journey begins.
I am what’s possible.
I am that I create.
I am that I make a difference.
I am ease, abundance, and contribution.
I am strong.
I am attractive.
I am active.
I am the best coach on the planet. (TBCOTP)

I have high expectations for others, and myself.
I am a man of integrity.
I am a man of action.

I am not afraid, even of death.
I am aware that I can’t do it all by myself.
Divine appointments happen to me daily, and I don’t miss them.

Money comes from serving others.
Money comes to me easily and frequently.
I am a client magnet.
I am that no one is worthy of my judgement, and everyone is worthy of my love.
I am that I am blessed and highly favored.

The most important people in my life are Jennifer Susanne Creel and Max Wayne Creel.
Nothing I can do, say, think, or imagine can separate me from the love of Jesus Christ.
I am His. Nothing seen or unseen can take that away from me.
I am my word.
I am love, and loved.
The best is yet to come!
It’s not about me.
My name is David, and I’m beloved.
As for “what I do”, I help people see things they can’t see, so they can achieve the impossible and I love guiding people to achieve greatness in their lives. Along with being a coach, I also run “The Blindspot Bookclub” where we read a book a month, and hop on zoom and discuss it.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
PC (persistent consistency) and commitment.
Persistent consistency is doing whatever is required, as often as is needed, to achieve the desired result.
Commitment… nothing happens until one is committed, and once someone is committed, everything begins to happen.
As for those starting out, “get so good they can’t ignore you” and don’t take rejection personally. “Failure is an event, it’s not a person” – Zig Ziglar.
Bonus item, sometimes people say they are afraid and need confidence to take a step forward. However, confidence only comes AFTER the action is done… what you actually need is, COURAGE. Take a small step… and then, take another way. Rinse. Wash. Repeat.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
Multiple books have had a profound impact on me:
1. The Bible – this is miles ahead of every other book…. M I L E S.
2. See you at the top – Zig Ziglar – mindset is everything.
3. The Courage to be Disliked – the world is simple, and life is too
4. The Courage to be Happy – happiness is a result of making a positive contribution to people’s lives
5. Leadership and Self-Deception – 3rd Edition – Getting out of the box – there’s 2 ways to see people: you can see them as people, or you can see them as objects.
