Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rachael Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Rachael with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My work ethic and determination has defiantly comes from my father, Will Wilson. We are a 6th generation butcher shop and everything I know about the business has come from him.
At the age of 4, my parents broke off from the Ogden Location, to start Snider Bros. Meats in Salt Lake City. For 2 years my father would drive the hour drive from Ogden to SLC every day (rain, snow, and sun). He worked every single day and would come home an still make time for our family every night.
At the age of 14, I officially was working the summers alongside my dad and the crew. It is during those summer months of work where I saw how much my dad gave to this business and what it took to have a successful store with a happy crew. In those summers I learned how to lead, show compassion, inspire, and grow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Rachael Wilson and I am a 6th generation butcher. I run and manage my parent’s retail meat market and butcher shop alongside my brother, Jake Wilson.
Snider Bros Meats has been at our current location for 33 year, but we trace our humble beginnings all the way back to Texas. From there our family had meat markets in Oregon, Washington, and California. Our father, Will Wilson, left California with his brother and Grandpa to start Snider Family Meats in Ogden. It was at that meat market that my father met Amy, my mom, they got married and had us. Eventually they broke off with the family market to start their own, Snider Bros Meats, in SLC, UT.
Today Snider Bros. Meats is still family owned and managed. We are a premium retail meat market with over 72+ feet of fresh meat cut but on-site butchers everyday. Snider’s also offers a wide array of frozen products such as sausages, meat pies, and game meat.
Snider Bros. Meats prides itself on offering the best in quality products/meat, exceptional service, and selection. Our focus today is the same today as it has always been to make our customers and community happy. In a world where customer service is a thing of the past and meat comes in pre-cut and foam packages, we are proud to stand out and above offering the best service and fresh meat around.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my growth as a manager and leader in the shop areas and qualities that are vital in my journey have been:
-To hold Expectations: At the end of the day we have to strive to have a consistent quality product and service to offer our customers. How to maintain and keep high standards while understanding the strengths of your team and crew is vital.
– To Speak Up: As a young woman in a mostly male field and with a mostly male crew it a learning curve for me to dictate task and ensure the jobs were getting done.
– Trust: Building a good team and being able to trust your crew is vital. As a manager you physically can not do it all. You have to let others in to help and get the job done.
All of these skills comes with time. But feedback from others and a willingness to learn will go along way. Be positive and show compassion to those you work with, but also to yourself.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
It is my believe that the best client we have is not the one who comes in and drops $$$ on steaks for a business party…. while we appreciate that very much. It has always been a family thought that the best client is the elderly lady that comes in once or twice a week to get a pound of chicken and a pound of ground beef. She is our most loyal customer and will tell all her friends about her butcher.
Truly everyone who enters our shop is important and we value everyone who comes. We would not be in business without our customers. We make an effort to keep them happy and treat them like family.
