Meet Rudraa Pratap Singh

We recently connected with Rudraa Pratap Singh and have shared our conversation below.

Rudraa, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I think the word purpose gets misunderstood a lot in today’s world. People relate it too closely to one’s career, and that’s something I’ve always been confused about. It’s so much more than that. When it comes to my career, my love and passion for acting were always around; it didn’t really just ‘pop up’ one day. I always performed for friends and family, imitating others or just ‘acting’ like I was asleep in the car after reaching home from a dinner, just so my parents would carry me to my room.

There was a trigger moment in my life when I realised I wanted to do this professionally, and that was when I played the role of a ‘Cheeky Cobbler’ in a version of Julius Caesar in fourth grade. Yes, there was a lot of validation from my family and my friends’ parents, but that was just reassurance. What did it for me was being able to ‘play’ and just express myself in front of an audience. That feeling was a rush; it was something that piqued my curiosity, something that I kept wanting to discover. Almost like a journey. Ever since then, each time I’ve performed it’s an extremely different experience from the last.

I still believe I’m on this journey, and I’m hoping there’s no destination because every step of it has been such a thrill and a learning experience.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m an actor and writer from New Delhi, currently based in Los Angeles. My work spans across theatre, film, and independent storytelling. I trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in New York and recently completed my BFA in Acting from CalArts. I’ve worked on stage and in film, both in India and the U.S., and I’m currently focused on building a career in front of the camera, primarily in film and television.

What excites me most is creating work that is raw, layered, and rooted in imagination. When I say imagination, I mean it in a realistic way of storytelling or ‘heightened realism’, not so much fantasy, but this is ever changing with new inspiration coming my way. My favourite element of creating or performing has always been about collaboration, as I learn so much from my cast, crew, coworkers, and mentors. It’s something that fuels my creativity. I am fascinated by people.

Right now, I’m developing a short film titled ‘Code Switch’, which explores themes of conflict, ambition, and legacy through a South Asian lens. I’m also actively pursuing work in both indie and mainstream film, TV, and Theatre, looking to collaborate with directors, storytellers, and writers who value nuance and depth.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The first would be staying optimistic. Being an actor and entering this industry is no easy task, especially mentally. As artists, we deal with rejection, self-doubt, and a lot of waiting. But that’s part of the journey. That’s our struggle. A bad day doesn’t mean a bad week. As corny as it sounds, believing in yourself and knowing your worth has been the most impactful lesson for me. You’ll always be your harshest critic; don’t let someone else’s words define who you believe you are.

Second, collaboration. Even if you prefer working alone, getting feedback or building something with others always makes the work stronger. It keeps you grounded. You’d be surprised how much you can learn just by observing someone else’s process. Personally, my co-actors and classmates have been my biggest inspirations. I’ve grown more from working with them than from any solo exercise.

And finally, take risks. It sounds obvious, but seriously, do it. If it doesn’t work, at least you know you tried. If it does, the work speaks for itself. Don’t let fear or self-doubt stop you; let them push you. Write that script. Try a bold choice in a scene. Send that email. Just keep at it and don’t hold back.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

As I’ve mentioned, I’m always looking to collaborate. I’d love to connect with actors, screenwriters, playwrights, producers, and directors, anyone interested in telling honest, bold stories. Let’s chat and see how we can create something together.
