We were lucky to catch up with Latrell R. Morris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Latrell R., thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
When I am becoming too stressed, I take breaks. I will not allow myself to continue writing when I don’t feel at ease because if I did, I wouldn’t be able to put my heart into it and give my best.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’ve been writing since I was a little girl. Writing allowed me to escape the “ordinary” world around me. I’ve always been into the horror and science fiction genres. My love for the genres came from being exposed to the movies, television shows, and books. I seen them as genres that were far outside the norm and that’s one of the reasons I was really attracted to these genres.
In 2020, I decided to get very serious with writing and I started writing my first book, Nova: The Executioner of Justice, which was released in October 2021. Since then, I’ve released nine novels/novellas. Currently, I am working on an horror anthology with Ginny Davis, which will be released this fall. I’m also working on more books as well as short stories.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Boldness, inspiration, and ambition. The advice I always give is to write what you love; what’s in your heart. Be authentic to you at all times.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I listen to music. Music has played a big part in my life. It helps to calm me and get me back in the right headspace. Sometimes it’s even inspiration for a story.
