Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Preston’s Positive Creations. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Preston’s Positive Creations, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I just tell myself not to worry about it. I will always have something going on and another event to attend. If you don’t have people talking about you than your not relevant. Being an event photographer who works in media my face is always on the front lines. Despite haters trying to hold you back. I’m quite resourceful at finding ways to accomplish my goals. Gate keepers are real in the entertainment industry. If someone does not like you or want you there that just means you have to go an alternative route. I always have options and a full plate as I like to stay busy.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I became in love with photography and videography early on when I was in high school. I took camera basics, photoshop, and graphic design classes in high school. I was born with high spatial intelligence so lining up images in a frame became natural for me. I was lucky to have been able to have access to my own laptop and digital camera where I was able to learn and practice with various software and technique. My style has always gravitated to a natural look with the best color correction I can create. I started making multiple videos a day and uploading them for practice to develop my style. I later started volunteering my time to event organizers. From there I practiced covering lots of people, concerts, seminars, and conventions. I than started to cover local art galleries and painting events. Most of the art that I enjoy was also mixed in with music I enjoy. I have been a fan of primarily dubstep music since 2007. I started attending music concerts in 2014 and quickly started collecting as much music as I could. I decided to learn how to dj so I could spin this music out for others. I started coming out to open decks nights and quickly gained my first show as a headliner only after six months of self taught practice. I started to draw crowds, lovers, and supporters of my art from all over the world as I am open to connecting with other like minded creatives and communities. I would have to say everything I do in the music and art communities have all been interconnected and I’m very happy and appreciative to be involved in all of it. My main project I enjoy working on is my Instagram that is very much involved in delivering high quality highlights and content, but I am currently working on building a YouTube channel with high quality concert videos that I’ve attended.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’d say establishing connections and good relationships with the event organizers is the most crucial skill. If you don’t make contact and establish good connections with event organizers than you either will never be hired.
I’d also say perseverance is a strong ethic to have. Being an event photographer and someone who networks means you have to put yourself out there on the front lines. You have to be open to hate, doubt, and criticism as it comes with the job.
I’d have to say as a photographer knowing your rights to intellectual property and not getting taken advantage of is a very big skill to have early on. There is far too many people now a days who think just because an image is posted online it becomes public domain or others think they own the rights just because they are in the image.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Honestly the most impactful thing my parents have ever done for me was cheer me on the whole time, and support me every step of the way. They have given me endless love, kindness, and support. My parents have taught me to treat others with the utmost compassion and respect. I owe my parents everything and I would not be here with out them. They are my biggest inspiration. I have nothing but love for them and wish I could give them the world.
