Meet J. Alex

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to J. Alex. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

J., so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

I let my imagination run wild and refuse to put limits on what my art can be. I carry a small art notebook with me everywhere so I can jot down ideas as they come — whether it’s a color palette I see on the street or a random thought that could spark a whole new series. I also challenge myself to think outside the box and push past my comfort zone. Sometimes that means experimenting with new materials, exploring cultural themes, or simply asking, “What if?” Creativity stays alive when you nurture it, stay curious, and give yourself permission to dream big.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a visual artist focused on celebrating Black beauty, culture, and storytelling through bold, expressive paintings and creative products. My work often highlights powerful imagery of Black women, drawing inspiration from both everyday life and imagination. What makes my art special is its intention — every piece is layered with meaning, emotion, and a sense of pride in where we come from and where we’re going.

Outside of canvas, I’ve expanded my brand to include everyday items like tote bags, notebooks, and magnets that feature my art, making creativity and culture accessible beyond the gallery wall. I’m constantly adding new items to my website, so there’s always something fresh to discover.

This summer, I’ll be showcasing new pieces at the Pancakes and Booze Art Show in Detroit, MI on August 2nd. I’m so excited to connect with the community, share my latest work, and continue growing in this journey as both an artist and entrepreneur.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three things that have had the biggest impact on my journey are consistency, self-motivation, and a deep eagerness to learn. Being consistent with my art and showing up for my dream — even on the hard days — has opened so many doors and connected me with some truly amazing people. Self-motivation has been crucial, because at the end of the day, no one can bring your vision to life but you. And I’ve always had a hunger for knowledge — whether it’s learning new techniques, experimenting with different mediums, or figuring out the business side of art, I’m always looking for ways to grow.

My advice for anyone starting out is simple but powerful: show up for yourself every single day. Even if it’s just one small step, take it. Keep creating, keep learning, and keep believing that the life you want is within reach — because it is.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Absolutely! I’m always open to collaborating with other artists — whether it’s to exchange ideas, spark inspiration, or co-create something powerful and meaningful. I’m also looking to partner with art galleries and curators who are passionate about showcasing bold, culture-driven work that celebrates Black beauty and storytelling. If you’re interested in collaborating or have an idea you’d love to bring to life together, feel free to reach out!
