We recently connected with Cornelius Turner and have shared our conversation below.
Cornelius , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
It was difficult being in a room when I was the only one that looked like me in my earlier career. I would try to keep quiet and speak like everyone else. Doing this truly dimmed my beautiful light, creativity, and originality. One day the Lord spoke to me and told me to be myself. In that moment, I realized that I do have a voice and valuable thoughts because I’m the only “Me” in the room. Being the only one that looks like you makes you stand out and memorable. So, use it to your advantage not disadvantage. It’s important to be professional and show your unique personality because it makes you marketable. Breaking pass this barrier has opened up doors for me with so many platforms and has created many opportunities . Now when I’m in these types of rooms, I hold my head up high and speak with confidence and assurance. It’s amazing to see how having self confidence will draw people to you. Ultimately we have to realize that we’re all people and children of the most High King. So, step into every room wearing your crown and knowing your worth.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Getting into the real estate industry can be very difficult. It requires a lot of determination, networking, and for you to be a sponge. Let’s start with the school process. Texas has very detailed real estate education program and it requires you to obtain 180 hours of pre licensing education with a State and National Exam. The first-time pass rate for the Texas real estate exam is approximately 57% which is a low average. With this being considered, it important for those trying to get into this industry to take school seriously, read all of the books, and study with excellence in mind! There will be days when you can’t see the finish but you have to push yourself to keep going and know you will win!
Networking is crucial in this industry. It is very important not to become a silent agent that no one knows. You truly have to put your self out in the world to be successful. This includes pushing your social media networks, marketing, going to social events, building continuous relationships with buyers/ sellers, building your influence with builders, lenders, inspectors, and so many more.
Being a realtor requires you to be a sponge. This means that you have constantly be willing to learn in a constantly evolving environment. I literally find myself discovering something new everyday and it truly excites me. You should never get to a point where you feel like you’ve learned it because life has a way of showing you all you don’t know lol. My ultimate advice for those coming into this industry is to never give up and never stop fighting. Also remember that you get out what you put in!
