Meet Colorado Bhangra Team

We recently connected with Colorado Bhangra Team and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Colorado Bhangra Team, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

We found our purpose through the workshops and camps we’ve held in the past as well as through the events we’ve performed at. Through all these events, we recognized that we are able to use our platform to not only spread awareness about a great dance, but also provide energy and enthusiasm wherever we perform.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

We’re a statewide adult bhangra team aiming to spread awareness about the beauty and joy of bhangra through performances, workshops, and competitions. Through the work we do, we aim to challenge the notion that one would have to be of a certain demographic in order to enjoy and excel at bhangra, and we strive to provide an environment where anyone who’s interested in learning more about the dance is welcome to be a part of our team. We’re also a growth mindset team, meaning we do not believe in the idea that one either has it or doesn’t when it comes to dancing. We believe that through enough dedication, effort, and enthusiasm, one can develop their abilities as a dancer and take their skills to the next level.

We’re hosting monthly workshops towards the end of the month for anyone who’s like to get a bit more immersed in the dance and learn some choreography, and we’ll be hosting these workshops on the last Saturday of each month, so if you would like to be a part of it, feel free to sign up on our website!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

One of the most important qualities to have that was the most impactful on our journey was having a growth or learner’s mindset. In other words, having the mentality that anyone who’s looking to learn more about the dance can do so through effort, dedication, and enthusiasm. This was also applicable to us as a team in terms of figuring out how we could expand upon our horizons and explore opportunities for us to make a greater impact on our community, which has led to us hosting various workshops, not only through our team, but with other dance groups as well.

Another quality that was critical for us to grow as a team was learning how to overcome adversity. We’ve experienced this on some level through some failures we may have experienced, or through some other struggles that prevented us from doing what we had hoped or how we had hoped to do them, but it was carrying the mindset that we have the ability to overcome them that has allowed us to continue to flourish as a team and understanding that adversity is a gift that can be leveraged to help us achieve our potential.

One more skill that was, and still is, critical in our journey is, of course, developing our expertise in bhangra so we can not only learn how to perform well at the events we perform at, but also help others learn and set an example. We help our members learn the fundamentals of bhangra through practices, and we occasionally hold watch parties for certain competitions that happen around the area so we can learn from teams who’ve been able to excel in the circuit and carry those same principles in our performances.

For anyone who’s looking to learn a bit more about the dance, but might be a bit hesitant because they fear that they may not have the skills or may not consider themselves a dancer, we want them to understand that a lot of our members started out the same way! But, through the effort they put in practice and outside of practice, they were able to get more outside their comfort zones and develop their confidence as dancers over time. There’s always a first time for everything, and as long as you have the interest to learn more about the dance and are able to stay committed to learning, your abilities will skyrocket as you get further and further along.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

We would love to collaborate with any other dance groups who are looking to mix bhangra with some of their workshops so we can help each other succeed and provide variety to our audience members. We would also love to collaborate with any sponsors who are looking for a team to help spread awareness about the great work they do and are passionate about supporting a dance groups like ours!
