We were lucky to catch up with Sean recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I was lucky to have great parents, that not only supported me following my music aspirations, but they also were tremendous role models.
Their strong work ethic was just one their personality traits I was fortunate to see every day.
And even today, I see those closest to me, like my wife and brother, working hard, and succeeding at carving out their path.
All of this has been motivating to me
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My job for the last 25 years is as a music producer and owner of Red Medicine Recording Studio.
But my path started many years earlier as a young musician poking around on a guitar.
Then during high school, I started playing drums in established bands around the area.
I had a very short stint at college, then I left home as a touring musician, playing with anyone and anywhere I could.
I played just about every style of music, in every imaginable venue. It was these years, and those experiences, that would become a valuable foundation for my ultimate landing spot as a songwriter and producer.
I returned home to form Red Medicine Recording Studio, It’s been my home base where I do just about everything that has to do with the creation and or capture of music.
Over the years, I’ve had many good and bad experiences in recording studios, so based off of those experiences, we designed Red Medicine from the ground up as a place where the recording process and equipment would never get in the way of the musicians and their creativity.
I’ve been fortunate to have recorded, mixed or produced legends like Aretha Franklin, Ronnie Spector, and Roger McGuinn, but I get just as much enjoyment bringing young musicians into the studio for the very first time.
My goal as a music producer is to get the music that’s in your head, to come out of the speakers.
Whether I’m writing with you, producing your song, or just mixing something you’ve recorded, I want to understand your intentions, and then amplify and exceed those goals.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 most important qualities or a producer would probably be the same things that are important to be successful in any job.
1. Really listen to your clients, understand their specific goals.
This is important in any job, but something as subjective and personal as music, we really must understand what the artist is looking for.
2. Music production is a blend of art and science, don’t let one overshadow the other.
It’s easy to get dazzled by all of the equipment and lose sight of the target, which is coaching and capturing a great performance.
But we do need to be technically competent enough so that the process doesn’t affect the art.
3. Be super organized, and great at time management.
At any one time I might have 8 different projects all in different states of completion, with clients and contributors from around the globe,
So being super organized, good at communicating, and structuring your day efficiently is the only way to be successful.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Well first and foremost, me and my brother grew up knowing unconditional love.
Something I foolishly thought all kids had.
So in addition to that, all the generous, selfless, support they provided.
From buying me my first set of drums, to the lessons, to driving 15 year old me to nightclubs to play and staying until we were finished, to supporting my decision to leave college and pursue music, and countless other examples.
And…. they were always being my biggest cheerleaders.
I was so very, very, very fortunate to have them as parents.
