We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kylah Edge a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kylah, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Honestly, it is still a work in progress. I try to just continue to encourage myself and reassure myself whenever I get down. I try to not compare myself to others and just do what I know is best for me.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a photographer based in Atlanta Georgia. I started out shooting as a hobby but eventually turned it into a business and named it KJE Shots. I always have loved art and creating and photography gives me an outlet to show whats inside my brain. One of my favorite things is to see the finished product on display. Like to see how it started and for to blossom into such an amazing art form is such an amazing feeling. I photography everything from weddings, portraits, events etc. and just to be able to tell a story through my camera is a indescribable feeling.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
When I look over my journey three qualities that we most impactful would have to be patience, having a good personality, and perseverance. Patience is essential because photography is way harder than it looks. There are so many settings to learn, different tools that help the quality of pictures and so many other things. But you don’t get those things right away so I had to be patient and take the time at to learn. Having a good personality can get you further than you could imagine. Not only does it help with clients but also networking. I have gotten so many opportunities because of my personality (paired with my work of course). Your personality is what makes you different from others and it something you should lean into. Everybody is not going to like you but I am a firm believer that what is for you is for you so it is perfectly okay. Perseverance is probably the toughest one. There are definitely slow and low seasons as a creative. But faith has been a big thing for me and just not giving up and you will reap the benefits in the end.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
I think the number one obstacle I am facing right now is consistency in clients. I am not at the point yet where I can fully depend on photography to sustain my life needs right now and I don’t always get clients who are fully willing to pay for the service. And I know that may always be a obstacle but I just don’t want it be as big as it is now. Sometimes people don’t understand the work it goes into quality photos and conversation can definitely get annoying. But I am going to keep going and keep posting my work so I can get to the level of my desire.
