We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Devin Henry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Devin, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
My self-discipline comes from understanding how far I’ve come and the journey to make it farther. I have moments where I am uncertain of the future, but I remain disciplined because that is the way my work ethic will continue to show. I can not always ask others to take on the vision that I have for my photography business when I am not putting in the work to make it happen. There are moments where doubt and angst can come into play, but I remind myself that there is a bigger purpose through it all.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Devin Henry and I am a photographer, videographer, and content creator out of Madison, WI. I specialize in portrait photography but I am not limited to lifestyle, editorial, and family photography. My photography business is called Grow Entertainment and it is something that I built and developed over the past two years. My favorite part of photography is just working with new people and expanding my artistic talent and creative visions.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three skills and qualities that have helped my journey are trusting the process, networking, and staying inspired. People that are early in their journey, continue to go to new places and meet new people. Try new creative gigs and execute new artistic visions. This will help you develop experience and will help you begin to see being creative from a new perspective.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth in the past 12 months is learning how to draw inspiration from a new area. I moved to Madison, Wisconsin from Greensboro, North Carolina a bit over a year ago. Since then, I’ve had to learn how to navigate a new market and put together new inspiration from an area that I do not originally come from. In these moments, I have learned how to have faith and trust that everything will continue to fruition the way that is supposed to be.
