We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Elizabeth. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Emily, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Most of my work ethic is innate. I come from generations of strong women who are breadwinners and also the primary caregivers in the family. We don’t know how to be still.
In addition to this natural habit to work, I’m also a single mother of three. Nothing can motivate you more than when you have three people looking at you every day for direction, advice, support, love, and a roof over their head.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I toggle back in forth between two professional roles: one as the CEO of Circadian Intimates, a 2x Finalist at the Best of Intima national awards, and the other as Managing Director, MTL Precision, where I am responsible for our North American business in inspection systems for aerospace, automotive, and industrial manufacturing
These are two vastly different worlds.
At Circadian Intimates, I leave unbelievably refreshed and in-awe of the people I meet and serve. The women who patron our store and kind, strong, smart, loving, and so supportive. I love sharing stories with our customers and hearing about their lives. It feels like making new friends every single day.
What we are working on at Circadian Intimates includes hosting regular community events for women where they can connect with others and grow their minds. These events will be hosted in our store and rotate topics. One month it could be about wellness, while another could be about financial planning, and another could be around motherhood. The idea is to find ways to support one another in the community.
The second big initiative at Circadian Intimates is around expanding our product offering. We just started our third year of business, so now I’m working on growing our collection of bras, panties, lingerie, and loungewear – in variety and in quantity depth. We followed just-in-time inventory practices the first two years to manage cash flow and I am realizing that we’re missing out on opportunities to fulfill our customers in-the-moment, so I’m planning capital around adding more quantities of our sizes.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When I first started in my career, I spent a lot of time working with customers and I hated it. I felt stupid. I never knew what to say or do. It took a lot of painful experience learning and growing to get comfortable with myself.
I’ve found this experience to be true in every new role I’ve held. It’s part of the process. You have to experience the painful growth to be an expert in anything.
Embrace this pain. While it sucks, it makes you wonderful when you need it.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
If you are an entrepreneur, or if you are in sales, you have to fill your cup on your own.
No one tells pats you on the back. Everyone is asking for more.
That is the environment I reside within. The only way to thrive in this environment is to focus on your strengths. When I’m in my element, I am can outshine the best. When you’re at your best, you’re growing and achieving goals.
When you’re constantly focused on how to improve the skillsets you’ll never master, you’re stuck in an unfulfilling grind that will never pay out.
Focus on building your strengths. When you’re young, work on developing your strengths and continue until you’re in a position where you can sub your weaknesses out to partners who shine in those areas.
This approach is a lesson in trust, communication, and self-growth.
