We recently connected with Joyce Coleman and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joyce , so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
I was incarcerated and was in with a lot of young ladies. We was on our way to court and a 17 year old young lady made the statement (I want the judge to sentence me at least 3 years). Tears ran down my eyes. She was the same age as my oldest daughter. Everyone started asking her why? Why? She replied I don’t have nowhere to go but to the street and the drug house. She also stated that she wanted to be free from drugs and a sex puppet. Everyone else in the room was looking and praying to go home that dad. I was sentenced that day. Later in my incarceration I met young ladies that was there with the same story no where to go. So I start dreaming if only there was a way for me to help. I dream of winning the lottery and buying homes to house women that needed a second chance in life. A home where there will be no judgment but full of resources love and understanding. That’s where Bloomin Sisters come from.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My skills and knowledge: I was impacted by the justice system. I lived behind the doors for 3 years. When.I was released I experienced going from job to job and getting a No. The Urban League of Atlanta gave me an opportunity with training for C.D.L. commercial drivers license. They worked with me until I found a job. Knowing that they was helping people with my background. I had the information that I needed to help others in my situation.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
