Meet Samantha DeSoto

We were lucky to catch up with Samantha DeSoto recently and have shared our conversation below.

Samantha , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

Creativity is essential in my industry. I spend most of my time building websites, so being creative is a large part of the job. From what I’ve seen, most people think that creativity is like a bucket and you only get so much, so they are afraid to use it up. However, creativity is more like a muscle; the more you use it, the more it grows.

I’m an artist at art. In my free time, I enjoy creating art in several different mediums. When I’m not painting, you might find me sculpting or taking a class on blacksmithing, knitting, glassblowing, or any number of other things, from cooking to leather working.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I own a digital marketing company that only works with small businesses. We offer an agency-level product at a low price point that small businesses can afford. Giving small businesses a competitive edge against the big corporations that are trying to run them out of business gives us life. We want to build a strong community that works together.

We offer custom WordPress website builds, organic and local SEO, optimized content for websites and print projects, and digital ads.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

First, focus on you and what makes you happy. We are taught that we just need to work hard and find a job that pays the bills. Yes, you should work hard, and yes, you do need to pay the bills, but when you focus on what makes you truly happy, what your calling is, that is when the universe provides for you.

Second, don’t let the world burn you out. Your physical and mental health are incredibly important. We need to do the hard work, we need to do things we don’t like sometimes, and we should take care of others. But when you need a break, you need a break. Find hobbies that give you life, and don’t care what others think about it. If sports is your thing, lean in; if you want to LARP and sword fight, go for it (safely). As long as it doesn’t hurt people, no hobby is a bad thing.

Third, don’t be selfish and don’t cut people out of your life for saying things you don’t like. If they have your best interests in mind, even if it’s uncomfortable, don’t cut them out. Find the people who say uncomfortable things because they are the ones who truly love you. They won’t sit back and watch you self-destruct.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

There are so many books that I truly love! Two that were really helpful in my business journey are The Happiness Advantage and You Are a Badass.

The Happiness Advantage talks about how people think that success leads to happiness, but in reality, happiness leads to success. Managers and business owners need to focus on their employees’ happiness, not drilling into them, for them to give you their best, most creative, and productive work.

You Are a Badass is great at helping you have the courage to focus on your true calling and overcome impostor syndrome.

I highly recommend everyone read these books and incorporate their recommendations to improve their lives.
