We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charles Sherman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charles below.
Charles, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Confidence in my art career took root early on when I made a clear decision: I would never give up, no matter the creative obstacles or external barriers. Art, for me, is a lifetime commitment—not something to “try” for five or ten years to see how it goes. I believed in myself even when no one else did—not even the people I loved most. That unwavering confidence was forged over 25 years of creating without selling a single piece—and I have absolutely no regrets.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a sculptor, my highest aspiration is to create works that embody elegance, grace, and transcendent beauty. My current series, Miracle Towers, is a celebration of vertical movement—sculptures that rise with the miracle of flight and the spirit of elevation. Each piece is made up of triangles and are technically pyramids, expressing the timeless power of pyramid energy: strength, balance, and a connection between earth and sky. The vertical form suggests a protective, masculine presence, while the organic, flowing surfaces express the feminine. Together, they achieve a harmonious fusion of yin and yang.
In addition to my primary sculpture practice, I also create through two distinct artistic identities.
Kreatia Kali is my visionary creatrix persona. Her Culturescapes are bold, provocative works that merge sacred symbolism, traditional religion, pop culture, and fine art. Kreatia challenges the viewer to think deeply and personally—the viewer’s interpretation of her art is more important than what the artist sees in it.
Apollo Clay Smith, my third persona, creates Geoscapes—textural wall pieces that merge natural history with artistic alchemy. These richly layered works incorporate minerals, fossils, semi-precious stones, and hand-painted patinas to evoke a sense of Earth’s and the Universe ancient beauty reborn.
Each body of work offers a unique experience, but all are grounded in a singular purpose: to inspire awe, elevate the imagination, and awaken the spirit.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
All true masterpieces throughout art history share two essential qualities: extraordinary skill and profound creativity. These elements don’t arise in a vacuum—they are born from a deep understanding of the artistic lineage that precedes them. For me, this connection to the broader continuum of art has always been natural. I genuinely love everything about art: its history, its spiritual dimension, even the often-overlooked aspects like marketing and presentation. Embracing the full spectrum of art has never felt like a burden—it’s been a joy, a calling, and an ongoing conversation with the great artists who came before me.
My advice to young artists is simple but vital: don’t focus on selling your work—focus on becoming the best artist you can be. The commercial side will come in time, but first, commit yourself fully to your development. Study art history and learn from the masters. Look closely at great works of art and ask yourself what moves you, what doesn’t, and why. Train your eye to recognize excellence, not just in others’ work but in your own. The more you refine your vision and deepen your understanding, the more your art will speak with authenticity and power. Let your love of the craft guide you—and let that be your foundation.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Whether I have a decade left to live or just a single day, my answer remains the same: all of my focus and energy will be devoted to my next creative project. I was recently honored with an invitation to exhibit my three artistic personas at Art Context Miami, taking place December 2–7. My intention is to present the most powerful and compelling work of my career at this event. To support that vision, I’m embracing a daily practice of exercise, mindful nutrition, and living with deep gratitude. Just as importantly, I will go out of my way to uplift and support others along the journey.
