Meet Cathleen Laporte

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cathleen Laporte a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Cathleen, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I have allowed my intellect, creativeness and competence speak for themselves when I have been the only one in the room who looks like me. I make sure that my voice is heard because there was once a time, my voice would not have been allowed nor welcomed.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the founder and president of Athletes for Charity as well as the owner of Scripture Gang LLC.

Athletes for Charity was founded in 2004 and achieves its mission of benefiting youth and families in need by partnering with professional athletes, sports teams and leagues, as well as corporations committed to service. My latest venture has been a project on my mind for the past 10 years that I finally brought to fruition in January 2023. It is called Scripture Gang LLC and I pray will become a successful social enterprise. We aim to produce some pretty cool scripture based product ranging from clothing to greeting cards, pillows and more..

Our t-shirt collections will range from the Books of the Bible to select scripture (NIV and KJV). We will also offer home and office accessories to help you add the Word to your home and work environment. Our products will also make wonderful gifts for loved ones.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
(1) My love and reverence for God. (2) My Creativity and Innovative Thought
(3) Prayer

Just pick up a Bible and start reading. If you feel like something is missing from your life, you feel lost and seek peace and happiness in your life, I encourage you to develop your relationship with God. You can’t fully know God unless you read his Word.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Bible has played an important role in my development and I glean inspiration for my projects from scripture. I view the Bible as a book of inspiration and guidance. Did you know there is an actual definition of “love” in the Bible? If each of us adhered to the 10 commandments, the world would be a better place to live in e.g. no one would intentionally kill another. Did you know the shortest verse in the Bible is “Jesus Wept.” There are so many uplifting and motivational stories and phrases in the Bible to be explored and discovered by you.

When I was younger I received a KJV version of the Bible and realized that I didn’t understand what I was reading so it wasn’t of interest to me. Later in life, I was gifted an NIV version of the Bible and fell in love with the Word.
