We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Doug Burns. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Doug below.
Doug, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
As a song writer it can be difficult to stay creative. I write so many songs and sometimes it can be hard to come up with something unique or new. So, to stay sharp I listen to different genres both modern and things from the past to see where things could go. I also spend time learning new instruments to challenge myself which further opens up my creativity.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As a solo performer I play shows frequently throughout the year. But I try never to repeat something too often and understand that I have to keep things fresh. So I’m constantly creating new music and content while maintaining my core fan base but also pushing boundaries. What I do is unique and I’m very fortunate to be given opportunities to play to new audiences and share what it do.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The qualities that I found most helpful and still do are persistence, patience, determination. The music business has only gotten more difficult over the years and it can really frustrate newer performers. You have to trust in yourself and your craft but certainly be patient because things don’t happen overnight but never give up on something that you know is good.
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
If I knew that there was only a limited amount of time left I’m sure I would do exactly as I am now. I would fill that time with as much creative energy as possible and take as many chances as I could. Sitting on the sidelines never gets you where you want to be.
