We were lucky to catch up with Lucia Lopez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lucia, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
This is a great question. I don´t think I ever overcame Imposter Syndrome, but I have definitely learned how to identify that is what is happening in my head and it has nothing to do with my capabilities.
In an industry with so many professional , in which nothing is done in a certain way and your imagination and creativity is so what counts, I think doubting yourself and if you are doing it right or if you have the worth and capacity to be the one in the position you are in, is something that happens more often that we think. But, being able to say, “Okay, I acknowledge this feeling but I was offered the job for a reason and I am more than capable of doing it”, is what matters. Keep pushing, keep growing and not let the Imposter Syndrome win.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a Production Designer and actress originally from Madrid, Spain, now based in Los Angeles. After pursuing my degree inAudiovisual Communication at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, I landed in Hollywood at the New York Film Academy looking for a hands-on program that would help me further expand my knowledge in filmmaking. It was here where I found my
spot in the Art Department as Production Designer being able to create the visual style and believable environment that supports
the story.
What was supposed to be a job to help a friend became a transformative incident that led me to shift and solidify my focus as a Production Designer. The commitment to authenticity and meticulous attention to detail is something that I am always looking forward to pursue in every story that I tell. I continuously look forward to the challenges that the work brings with it making me
keep learning and innovating every step of the way. In addition, the power of teamwork, leadership, efficient work and adaptability allows me to craft compelling visual stories that resonates with the audiences.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. COMMUNICATION: I think this is key, and it can sound typical but it is surprising how difficult communication can become when you don´t have the skill, and it´s not only about knowing how to vocalize an idea, it´s also about being able to solve an issue without being aggressive or to be able to handle difficult situations without overwhelming the people involved.
2. TEAM WORK: again, it´s a classic but there is so many people out there that have no idea how to collaborate, specially and surprisingly n the film industry where even though there is a division by departments every single department is connected to the other and without that team work and collaboration its not going to happen.
3. KINDNESS: this one is a tricky one, because I have learned the hard way that kindness also comes with people thinking they can take advantage so I would say Kindness because we are surrounded by people all the time but do not forget what your limits are.
For me the key to develop and improve this qualities/skills is just to be open to the experiences and always assume that you are the person that knows the least on a film set and that way you will always have room for these three things
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
As a filmmaker I am always looking to collaborate. My partner an I have been looking forward to producing more stories, ADing, Designing and Directing any project that comes are way.
