Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nelson McMahon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Nelson, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity is a constant fire burning in one’s mind; it often requires fuel to sustain the never-ending flow of new ideas. In my practice, I find the first step on making sure my body stays creative is getting enough rest. When you wake up from a good nights rest, your body is able to fully marinate on the ideas you left it with and I find it is a necessary practice to fulfill your mind. Personal wellness aside, keeping your creativity alive demands constant field research and inspiration gathering. A practice I have started recently is keeping an inspiration log of any and everything which sparks a thought in my head and I have found it to be a beautiful routine which I look forward to whenever I have time. I would encourage every creative to delve into some sort of artistic journal , whether it be in a notebook , a computer document, etc. it truly is such a beneficial habit to upkeep. Another realm which I find to be constantly inspiring creatively is going outside and experiencing our world. Going for walks, people watching, sitting in nature; all allow for flourishing thought and creativity in one’s mind. I would encourage everyone to approach creativity as a practice with flows of energy , the effort you put into it is what you will get out, it is only when you truly delve into the magical nature of the world that your eye will begin to see the beauty all around us.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At its core, my passion is creating visual landscapes that draw emotion and tell stories. Something that has been most exciting recently has been collaboration with many talented individuals, and working on collective works. Often I am curating and bringing these groups together through directing and producing the project, and it makes me feel constantly fulfilled to see the joy everyone is getting from the cooperative project we are fulfilling together; each hyper fixated on their individual role, yet one. A great deal of the projects I do are personally funded, art based, and I hope to expand these into my ever flourishing ideas <3
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I would say the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been trust, communication, and dedication. Trust, both in myself and in others, helped me take risks and build strong relationships. Communication allowed me to connect, collaborate, and navigate challenges more effectively, while dedication kept me focused and resilient through setbacks. For anyone early in their journey, I’d advise being consistent and reliable to build trust, staying open and empathetic to improve communication, and finding purpose in your work to stay dedicated even when things are difficult.
