Meet Renee Saulney

We recently connected with Renee Saulney and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Renee, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

I use to be intimidated when I was the only one in the room that looked like me, but then I realized I was good at what I did. I had a good product so I had just as much right to be there as anyone else .

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I started out sewing in Middle school and never stopped. I find sewing and knitting is very relaxing. It’s almost like meditating. Being an only child I had lots of time to myself. I made all my clothes and when I needed a little extra money I made clothes for my friends. Since retiring 6 years ago I have taken my sewing skills to a whole new level. That’s why I consider myself a crafter and not a seamstress. I have elevated to making dolls, quilts and anything fiber related. I’m becoming known on the craft show circuit and been published in a craft magazine

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. You have to love what you do.
2. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. I’ve been sewing for probably 60 years and
still make mistakes
3. Take classes that interest you in you field. There is always something new to learn

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

I’m probably already in my last decade or two of life. My life wouldn’t change much from where it is today. I live life on my own terms. I sew and knit. I even paint occasionally. I travel, I spend time with my family.and friends. . I’m known for my day parties where we eat, drink and be merry. Life is good.
