We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Barbara. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Barbara below.
Barbara, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
When I began working in the NFL space in 2006, I was often the only Black woman in the room—and at times, the only woman, period. In an industry historically dominated by men, especially at the leadership and decision-making levels, I knew I had to bring more than just qualifications; I had to bring presence, confidence, and unshakable persistence. I’ve learned to be intentional about how I show up—commanding respect, leading with integrity, and consistently delivering results.
Building trust has been my superpower. I’ve prioritized relationships, shown up for people, and made sure my work ethic speaks louder than any assumptions someone may have about me. Nearly two decades later, it’s inspiring to see more women—and more women who look like me—take their place at the table. I’m proud to have helped open that door, and I remain committed to holding it open for others.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

There is nothing too hard for a strong, persistent leader!
I’m definitely coming alive in 2025!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Resilience has been essential. Working in a male-dominated industry as a Black woman required a thick skin, steady confidence, and the ability to keep moving forward even when the path wasn’t clear or welcoming. For those starting out, my advice is to stay grounded in your purpose. Obstacles will come—but if you stay focused on your “why,” you’ll keep going.
2. Relationship-building has opened more doors than any title ever could. People do business with those they trust. I’ve always made it a priority to listen, support, and show up consistently. For those early in their journey, don’t underestimate the power of genuine connections. Be someone people can count on—and build relationships before you need them.
3. Strategic thinking helped me move from just “doing the work” to leading the work. It’s one thing to execute, but it’s another to anticipate, plan, and build systems that create long-term impact. I encourage newcomers to always be thinking a few steps ahead. Learn how your industry moves and position yourself to lead in those shifts.
These qualities were not mastered overnight—but they were developed through intention, consistency, and the willingness to learn from every win and every setback.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I believe in doubling down on your strengths—because that’s where your magic lives. Your strengths are what set you apart and allow you to show up in a way no one else can. When you lead from that place of confidence and clarity, you not only perform better, but you attract the right opportunities, partnerships, and resources.
That said, I also believe in being self-aware enough to know your gaps, and wise enough to either improve them or build a team that fills them. You don’t have to be everything—you just need to know what you bring to the table and then surround yourself with people who complement that.
When I first started working with NFL athletes, I was strong in branding and relationship management, but I didn’t have experience negotiating contracts or handling legal matters. Rather than trying to become a lawyer, I built relationships with people who were experts in those areas and partnered with them. That freed me to focus on what I do best—building trust, telling stories, and creating impact—and it’s why I’ve been able to grow and sustain this work for nearly two decades.
So my advice? Master your strengths. Know your weaknesses. And build smart. That’s how you scale success.
