We recently connected with ChaosInCosplay and have shared our conversation below.
Hi ChaosInCosplay, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
We developed our confidence and self-esteem through cosplaying! Acting as a character allows us to present our insecurities without fear of being judge as we are not ourselves, and overtime showed us that having fun and being yourself is more valuable than harboring a fear of being judged. It look time, a mix of trial and error, supportive community, and learning to appreciate ourselves. At first, it was intimidating—putting ourselves and our work out there in costume, especially online where people can be quick to judge. But the more time we spent together meeting new people from our community, the more we realized that the joy of becoming a character and expressing ourselves was worth more than any fear of judgment. Positive feedback from friends and fellow cosplayers helped a lot, but the excitement from the children we meet is our biggest factor in continuing to do this! Eventually, we stopped aiming for quantity and started trying to perfect the characters we had, making sure we presented the best version of ourselves to everyone we meet.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We are a dedicated group of cosplayers passionate about bringing beloved characters to life through our performance, community engagement, and unforgettable interactions. Our group appears at conventions, birthday parties, hospital visits, charity events, and other special occasions, creating magical experiences for all ages.
What sets us apart is not just the quality and accuracy of our costumes, but the heart we put into every appearance. Whether we’re making a child’s birthday wish come true or working on branching out to bringing smiles to hospital patients through in-character interactions, we go beyond cosplay to create real moments of joy, connection, and inspiration.
From superheroes to pop culture icons, our group represents a wide range of genres and fandoms. Each member is committed to professionalism, inclusivity, and creating safe, welcoming spaces for everyone we meet. We work tirelessly to ensure that every appearance is tailored, memorable, and impactful.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Cosplay—especially when working with children—requires more than just wearing a costume. We learned early on that doing your homework matters. That means not only understanding the character inside and out, but also researching how kids think, what they respond to, and how to keep them engaged. The more effort we put into preparation, the more confident and capable we became.
We also learned to welcome feedback, not fear it. Whether it was from other cosplayers, admirers, or the kids themselves, we treated every piece of input as a chance to grow. That mindset helped us level up and build trust with the people we perform for.
And most importantly—ask questions. Ask other performers for tips, ask handlers for information, ask everybody about anything your curious about! Being knowledgeable is the best thing you can do for yourself and your business.
Our advice to anyone new to the cosplay world is to know your worth. It’s easy to compare yourself to others, but remember—your cosplay has value because you made it. Whether it’s store-bought, handmade, or a creative mash-up, your time, effort, and passion matter. Don’t let likes, followers, or perfectionism define your success. Know your worth, set boundaries, and never feel like you have to prove yourself to belong. You’re already enough—just by being brave enough to show up and do what you love. Also, if you are planning on purchasing a cosplay do the research on the company, expensive doesn’t always equal good!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When doing appearances at conventions or birthday parties, it is easy to get overwhelmed by crowds of people or a swarm of children asking questions about your character.
Before any event, it is important to prepare yourself mentally and physically.
– Know your limits by deciding ahead of time how long you plan to stay in crowded areas or at a specific appearance.
– Build a buffer in time by arriving early to conventions or events. Take the stress out of your day to keep your mind clear and calm for as long as possible. Set yourself up for a good day.
– Having a handler is a great way to stop an overwhelming situation before it gets bad. Get someone who knows you and nail down signals for when you need them to step in.
During an event it is important to ‘check in’ with yourself.
– Set soft boundaries when working with kids in a group such as holding out a hand and giving the kids the knowledge that you will speak with them directly one at a time. This also allows the kids to have one on one interactions.
– Taking micro breaks to get some water or do some breathing exercises is pivotal to keeping yourself level headed. Step away or find an empty area of the convention to step out of character and rest.
After the event, give yourself time to recharge and reflect on your time
– Sometimes emotional visits (like hospital visits or birthday parties) can linger. Talk it out with your teammates or friends or speak it out loud to yourself to process it.
– Make sure to eat something truly fueling. You’ll be surprised how many calories you burn running around a convention or posing and interacting with kids. Eating something nutritious helps muscle soreness.
