Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eric Huskisson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Eric, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I still struggle with this syndrome but I am a lot better with it than I was. It seems like longer but I’ve only been making films in the Indie film world for 13 years. That seems like a long time but I’ve only worked on a handful of films. I’m a lot more comfortable when I’m called a producer than when I’m referenced as a director, writer, or actor. With these talents it all boils down to personal experience and my confidence within myself. Yes, I’ve directed, written a script, and acted in Indie film but I don’t feel like those labels are one hundred percent deserved at this time. It comes more from self evaluation of myself rather than the label. At the same time, regardless of my lack of experience I have still completed all three positions, Even though I have performed all these film tasks at some level I don’t feel completely worthy of the title. I haven’t exactly overcome the syndrome but I’m getting closer everyday!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m co-owner of Blood Moon Pictures in Owensboro, Kentucky. This year, on December, 15th. the company will be 10 years old. I handle most of the unfun business side of the company by taking care of all the financials, taxes, contracts, copyrights, etc… When I’m not doing the not so fun jobs I also co-produce all the films our company has made over the years. Getting to also act in some of the films or do cameos is really fun for me. A short I helped produce and acted in, called “The Confession of Fred Krueger”, is on youtube and has over a million views. I also wrote and directed a short for “13 Slays Till X-Mas” called “Scarionette”. I really enjoyed co-directing our newest film “New Fears Eve”. and I stepped outside my comfort zone and wrote the lyrics to and produced the song “New Fears Eve” for the movie. I guess you can say I wear many hats within our company and right now the enjoyment out weighs the stress! We’re hopeful that we’ll have a contract signed for “New Fears Eve” soon and the movie will be out this year. We can’t wait to start on the next New Fears Eve.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the qualities I feel was impactful for me was my drive. I really wanted to work on a film and I found out PJ was getting ready to film a feature I begged him to let me do whatever he needed to help him out. I was pretty relentless and it worked. Doing this also enabled me to network and meet people with the same passion. The Indie scene is a very big community so it’s pretty easy to network.
I acted in high school and having experience with that skill helps me with our auditioning processes and my directing. I’ve been around enough actors to see who has the skill, how well they use the skill, and can they take direction.
I was a horror fan from an early age and the special F/X in movies is what I was most interested in and hooked me into the genre. I dabbled with special F/X throughout my life and it’s how PJ and I met. He was hosting an event he created and it was Zombie night so I made myself up and it caught his eye. I think this is what really helps me with working on horror films. When it comes to the gore and makeup I have more of a feel of how it should look.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents always supported me when it came to my artistic side. They thought it was great that I was in theater and always came to see my performances. My dad started calling me Hollywood when I was in high school and still does at times. I never made it to Hollywood and I didn’t do any kind of theatre or make movies for a couple of decades but that has all changed. I’ve been making movies for over 13 years now and my parents love it. My dad can’t believe what PJ and I are able to accomplish. If my parents hadn’t supported me over the years I probably wouldn’t be making films today.
