We were lucky to catch up with Briana Spears recently and have shared our conversation below.
Briana, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome hit me hardest when I left my nursing career and started my business. I went from a structured, respected profession to calling myself a “balloon artist,” and for a long time, I felt like people wouldn’t take me seriously—or worse, like I didn’t deserve the success I was beginning to see.
The turning point came during a large-scale install for a high-profile event. I had planned every detail, worked tirelessly, and the final results were beautiful—but all I could think was, “They’re going to find out I don’t know what I’m doing.” Then I watched people walk in and gasp. They were taking photos, complimenting the design, and asking for my business card. That moment forced me to confront the fact that my work was good—and more importantly, that effort, passion, and learning in real time are just as valid as formal training.
That said, I also knew that confidence comes with knowledge, so I eventually fully invested in myself and my business by purchasing classes and attending balloon conventions to take in-person training from the best in the industry. Not only did that sharpen my skills, but it helped me feel grounded and capable, like I truly belonged in the room—and in this business.
I also started surrounding myself with other creative entrepreneurs and mentors in the industry. Talking openly about those “not enough” feelings helped normalize them and gave me tools to reframe my mindset. Now, when those doubts creep in, I remind myself: I’m not an imposter—I’m just still growing. And growth doesn’t require perfection, just courage and consistency.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Bri, the creative heart behind Desert Darlin’ Balloons—an event decor business based in Phoenix, Arizona. After working as a nurse and becoming a stay-at-home mom, I found myself craving a creative outlet. What started as balloon decor for my daughters’ birthday parties quickly grew into a full-fledged business fueled by passion, hard work, and community support.
Desert Darlin’ Balloons specializes in custom balloon installations that bring the wow factor to events—whether it’s an intimate baby shower or a large-scale corporate celebration. I create everything from luxury balloon garlands and grab-and-go backdrops to boutique helium bundles and fully styled photo moments. What makes this work so special is that it’s more than just balloons—it’s about creating unforgettable experiences and celebrating life’s milestones with color, fun, and intention.
One of the most exciting parts of this journey has been watching my business evolve and connect me with other creatives, amazing clients, and even charitable organizations. I’ve recently had the opportunity to partner with brands, work with local venues, and support nonprofit events—something I’m deeply passionate about.
To continue leveling up, I’ve been investing in professional development by taking advanced classes and attending international balloon conventions to learn the newest techniques and trends. I love bringing that knowledge back to the desert to better serve my clients and keep things fresh and fun.
What’s next? I’m working on expanding my offerings with seasonal grab-and-go packages, themed installations, and possibly even DIY balloon kits in the future. My goal is always to make celebrations more joyful, more memorable, and uniquely darlin’. Whether you’re a fellow mom, a bride-to-be, or a corporate planner—I’m here to help bring your vision to life, one balloon at a time.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been resourcefulness, resilience, and relationship-building.
1. Resourcefulness
Starting a creative business from scratch—without a background in design or formal training—meant I had to figure a lot of things out as I went. I leaned into learning through trial and error, online tutorials, and eventually, by investing in classes and conventions. My advice: don’t wait to feel “ready.” Start with what you have, be scrappy, and stay curious. There’s so much you can learn by just getting your hands dirty and doing the work.
2. Resilience
There were plenty of moments I questioned if I was good enough or if people would take me seriously, especially after pivoting from nursing into a completely different field. Imposter syndrome is real, but resilience is what kept me moving forward. To anyone just starting out—expect challenges, but trust that every obstacle teaches you something valuable. Keep showing up, even when it’s hard.
3. Relationship-Building
This business wouldn’t be what it is without genuine connections. Whether it’s collaborating with other vendors, building client trust, or learning from fellow balloon artists, relationships have opened doors I never could’ve reached alone. For anyone new to their journey: network with heart. Be kind, be consistent, and give as much as you hope to receive. Community is everything.
At the end of the day, building something meaningful takes heart and hustle. Stay focused on growth, not perfection.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely! I’m always looking to collaborate with fellow creatives, brands, and businesses that align with the fun, modern, and celebratory spirit of Desert Darlin’ Balloons. Whether you’re a photographer looking to style a shoot, a party planner dreaming up something bold, a venue in search of a preferred vendor, or a local business wanting to add some balloon magic to your next event—I’d love to connect.
I especially enjoy working with other women-owned businesses, event pros, and anyone passionate about creating memorable moments with intentional design and a little desert flair.
