Hi Donny , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Honestly, it all traces back to my roots in Nebraska—a place where wide-open skies met even wider dreams. From an early age, my parents showered my little brother and me with affirmations that lit a fire in our hearts: “You only have limitations if you set them—or people don’t rise to low expectations.” Their words became a soundtrack to my childhood, nudging me to believe in myself, to see every challenge as a chance to shine.
Fashion has always been my superpower, my way of painting the world with my personality. I grew up captivated by the cultural pulse—where high fashion collided with streetwear, and everything felt possible. Blending those worlds, I carved out a style that was uniquely mine, bold enough to earn me the title of “Best Dressed” in my senior year of high school.
Looking back, I realize those early experiences didn’t just shape my wardrobe—they shaped my spirit. They taught me to celebrate individuality, to lift others up, and to see beauty in every story.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
This year has been nothing short of extraordinary! We were thrilled to be recognized at Woodbury University’s Annual Runway Show in May, where our “A Year in Review!” capsule collection dazzled the crowd. Featuring standout pieces from our California Business Casual campaign, including our fresh golf shirts and stylish short sets, the collection made waves. Our buzzworthy collaboration with SOLE FOLKS brought you the “Holiday Vacay” collection, perfect for unforgettable getaways in any climate. In April, we launched WERK WEEK ONE—our women’s business casual line—delivering chic, comfortable wrap dresses and custom suiting designed to empower and inspire. Unfortunately the wrap dresses are no longer available due to the tariffs with China. My vendor will no longer ship to the United States. Diligently working on a path to get them back ASAP!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey so far, I believe three qualities have been especially impactful: creative vision, resilience in the face of rejection, and the courage to innovate. My creativity has allowed me to see possibilities where others might only see limitations, continually pushing the boundaries of my designs. Learning to handle rejection has been equally vital—each “no” became an opportunity to grow, refine my work, and persist with even greater determination. Most importantly, I’ve embraced forging new paths, unafraid to experiment and bring fresh perspectives to the table.
Exposure to diverse forms of art and culture has profoundly influenced my outlook. Celebrating my 50th birthday with visits to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Superfine Black Dandyism exhibit in New York, the Met, and an inspiring Broadway show ,”Hell’s Kitchen” not only deepened my appreciation for the contributions of African Americans but also reminded me of the enduring power of creativity to shape and uplift communities worldwide.
To those just starting out, my advice is to discover and nurture your unique voice. Understand what truly defines you as a designer—not just what makes you special, but what differentiates you from others. Pursue excellence with honesty and conviction, remain open to learning, and never lose sight of the promise within yourself. The journey may be challenging at times, but with integrity and a commitment to continual growth, your potential is limitless.
