We were lucky to catch up with Lauren Scorey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
I don’t often struggle with burnout in photography, but when I do feel that creeping sense of fatigue, I have a go-to method for resetting. I love to disconnect from work and social media and immerse myself in nature with my dogs.
I often take my camera along on hikes, capturing my dogs in their natural state, without any expectations. I don’t pose them or ask them to perform; I simply let them be themselves. This approach is incredibly freeing and reminds me of the joy that photography brings me.
Taking the time to disconnect and reconnect with my own dogs helps me remember why I fell in love with photography in the first place. It reinforces my passion for the craft and reminds me why I enjoy sharing these moments with others.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a pet and family photographer, and I specialize in capturing the incredible bonds between pets of all kinds and their owners. I also love photographing families with little ones, whether they have pets or not, and I truly enjoy any combination of the two! Working with pets and kids brings me so much joy. They both have this amazing sense of adventure and curiosity that resonates with me. Capturing them in their purest moments, interacting with each other and their environment, is such an exhilarating experience!
A significant part of my work involves celebration of life sessions for owners with aging pets. These sessions hold a special significance for me, as they often become some of the last images an owner will have with their beloved companion. The emotions captured during these sessions are deeply heartfelt, and while they can be bittersweet, they provide a powerful opportunity to reflect on the incredible bond shared.
I’ve expanded my work to include a wider variety of clients, such as couples, kids’ birthday celebrations, and dog events. I also collaborate with rescues to photograph dogs looking for their forever homes. Additionally, I offer destination adventure days, where I capture the special moments between owners and their pets as they hike, swim, and explore nature together.
I genuinely enjoy all my sessions and love being part of creating memories for people to look back on years from now

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities that have really helped me on my journey are recognizing what I don’t know, having the desire to learn and improve constantly, and being resilient enough to never give up.
I truly believe that the moment you think you know everything is the moment you stop growing. I’ve always had this drive to improve, and even now, I know there’s so much more to learn. I’ve been inspired by many others whose work I admire, and I’ve reached out to those who are willing to share their knowledge when I have questions.
The more you practice, the better you get in almost every aspect of life! Progress may not always come quickly, but having the resilience to continue honing your skills is crucial—especially in a creative field like photography and when running your own business. It’s all about persistence and the willingness to keep pushing forward.

How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone with a vision in mind who trusts me to help bring that vision to life. I absolutely love when someone reaches out with an idea and is open to collaborating to turn that vision into reality!
Even clients who may not think they have a clearly defined vision often discover that they do, especially after some prompting questions. I find that they have a sense of what they want their images to convey, and they place their trust in me to bring those ideas to life.
One of my favorite aspects of photography is working with clients who are willing to try different things, even if they seem a bit silly or unconventional. Those moments often lead to stunning images that capture the deep emotions between pets and their owners, or the unique dynamics within families. I’m incredibly grateful to all my clients for allowing me to be a part of their lives in such a meaningful way!
