We were lucky to catch up with Billy Wright recently and have shared our conversation below.
Billy , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Creativity seems to come from anything that might inspire, and it seems that inspiration has endless avenues. It could be that I heard or read something that someone said, or maybe the way something was sung or and how it made me feel.
I’m often learning songs for clients or artist in various styles. And these tunes may deposit a style or technique that adds to my creative artist language as well.
Life deposits inspiration and creativity. And for me, my life and devotion to God is at the center of it all.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I work a variety of jobs within the music industry. Work in music has definitely been a journey and discovery.
Some of the jobs i do are performing solo and duo shows for variety of clients and events. I get hired playing guitar or also singing for a variety of bands or artist covering a wide range of music, events and concerts.
I’ve gotten a chance to play or tour for J Holiday, Katelyn Jae-Brown, Shyann Roberts (June’s Diary), and Billy Buchanan, Just to name a few.
I’ve worked recording guitars or singing for artist and songwriters for different projects.
One project was featured on ABC Network for the dance group Funky Wunks
At the end of 2019 I started a venture for songwriting and producing songs for Television, Film and Ads.
Recently I started working writing production music for Tv, Film, and Ads, as well.
As an recording artist I’ve released one LP titled Sunrise (2011) and an EP titled Right Now (2016) along with two singles: The Conversation (2022) and Can’t Let This End (2023)
I have a two other full length albums that are very close to being finished for release.
It’s been a while since, as an artist, I’ve performed concerts, specifically with my own songs, but I’m hoping with the release of my forthcoming new albums, I’ll be able to get back out there.
In the past I’ve opened for Paul Freeman (was the guitarist for James Blunt & Trisha Yearwood), opened for Red Wanting Blue, opened for Ever Clear , and -performed at the National Underground (Owned by Gavin Degraw, & Joey Degraw (Nashville, TN)
I’ve started working on writing a book. I had an idea for it for a while. Just recently, some more ideas came to mind to really make sense, so I’m writing. We’ll see how it goes.
I don’t know when the publishing is coming out, but some upcoming shows I’m excited about, is doing a concert event for Universal Studios City Walk (Orlando), doing Broadway tunes, and the following day I’m doing a Stevie Nicks show tribute show also in Orlando.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
There’s so many things I can say on this. Everyone’s journey is different. I have picture moments that I know were impactful to mine. Being in an environment that develops you as an artist.
When I was in kindergarten, my teacher played the piano and sung. From that day forward, knew doing music at some level was something I had to be part of. I wrote my first song a few days after meeting being in that environment.
Be open to embrace something new or different.
I get to learn a lot of different styles of music: different palates of language and telling stories. Learning them, or embracing them develops my own language and expression and skills, which is especially helpful when you’re working with a team of likeminded professionals who all looking to create an amazing experience for others
Give your self grace
Try as much as you can not to beat yourself up too much, if you make mistakes or something is taking too long. I don’t think being an artist is just about the goals, but it’s also about living. Be thankful in the moments given, and keep on moving, one step at a time
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Being overwhelmed is one of those things we might all experience at some point in our living experience.
I live in Florida where, especially in the summer, a thunderstorm could roll in, blocking out the sun, drenching the streets; but then 45mins later, you couldn’t tell it had rained just a little while ago.
In Living life, things could be going wonderful one minute, and the next, the complete opposite of sunshine.
There’s a few things I may do when I’m overwhelmed, and not necessarily in this order.
I’ll be honest with myself about being overwhelmed. Sometimes that alone helps me get through the chaos.
Prayer is important to me as well.
There are songs that I may listen to, which help me through. Other times there maybe, thank goodness, someone I could call or reach out to.
In the end, the sunshine always returns no matter how long whatever it was that blocked us from seeing the good days again.
