We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luke ATME a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Luke, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
If there’s some sort of situation which I’m familiar with, is definitely that kinda of time when you look around and see there ain’t anybody else speaking your voice, thinking in your direction, or simply looking like you. I have always felt very extroverted in either my attitude or my style, going for insane looks, different grooves, crazy fits. At first when I was younger this made me feel uncomfortable, I was at times bullied for that, for being different, but nowadays I learnt to valorise myself, and this is where my artist name comes from: Luke ATME (look at me). I have crafted the skill of using this sort of orientation and turning it into my artistry and creativity. It’s part of my persona, and this is what makes me stand out. Same thing for the approach to life I guess, I have always been the only one in the room fantasising to go live abroad, start my life from scratch, make memorable experiences, and most of the people thought I was jus being childish and daydreaming. I did follow that path though, and I stand up proud to be where I am today. I guess if you want to make a difference in the world, you shouldn’t worry to much about all thinking alike each other, but instead stand by your principles and ideas and convert it into efficiency. Your originality is going to be rewarded and this is going be the key to success.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been working with music since a few years ago, but from an early age I was much into dance, acting and music. I eventually stopped pursuing the first two and I just got deeper into singing, but I do blend all of those if I get the chance in both my music videos and performances. I do have crazy ideas so it’s not always that easy to make them real, there’s obviously a big team behind it all but I do get into each single detail myself before anybody else just to make sure my idea has been understood by everyone and it’s getting just how I want it to be. Recently I released an EP called “Sin Filtros” which marked an important step in my career, for being the first project in which I take a clear position, talk out loud about my desires and embrace my orientation . It’s a very uplifting project and the visuals just convey that vibe of living life, process your feelings and bad experiences by making them your strength. I also have a collab that has just been dropped, “Bailando” feat. Tyvenchyy, which is a must in your summer playlist if you want to shake it off and dance along. Of course there’re some other projects I am working on, and I have got something ready to be released sometimes soon. Meanwhile there’s lot of great music I invite you to listen to through my socials and all digital platforms.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I will highlight one of each from those. The most remarkable quality who helped me out through my journey is probably being fearless, no situation ever scared me to the point that I would not move towards it, actually it’s quite the opposite, I always wanted to prove myself that I could get into anything. The most helpful skill I acquired is the capacity to hear bad feedbacks and turn them into lessons so I could improve. Being a public image and working with audience and public, rest assured that you will have to face unpleasant comments and nasty talks about you or your craft, but remember you are not to be liked by everybody, there will always be people who disqualify you or make you look miserable, but you gotta acknowledge that possibility and make it constructive. Lastly, I must admit that knowing how to navigate into this industry and having some sort of sense about marketing definitely made a difference in my final outcome. In this field lot of people take advantage of new emergent musicians and their dreams just to idealise things they want to hear, they take money out of them and also steal their creative stuff. So as an advice for the folks who just got up this journey, be careful about who you decide to wok with and who you entrust your skill to.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
First of all, my fans of course, when I see messages of people feeling brightened by my music, relieved by my lyrics, that really pushed me to always do more and better. If I didn’t have that kind of support I wouldn’t probably be here today still pursuing this career. Secondly, my friends, the ones who always been standing by my craziness and resilience, the ones who never judged me for my decisions and especially who transmitted me positivity every time that I felt like giving up. Lastly, my family also gave me the power to believe in myself and my dreams, I have great leading examples from both my parents and my brother, this always gave me that feeling to show them I can be just like them even if I choose some different direction. This has always motivated me to do great things, for me and for them.
