Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melissa Henning-Frank. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Melissa, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
The first half of my life I got my resilience from a burning desire to take control, prove people wrong and keep going. I had no choice but to overcome the many barriers and obstacles I faced. Not learning and not growing were not options for me. My survival depended on resilience, and I had lots of it. The second half of my life I continue to lean on my resilience though it comes with a more powerful & renewed energy of hope, belief and purpose. A health scare personally really woke me up to something people don’t think about as often as they should: our own limited time, our mortality. Then, more recently, the death of my earth angel developmentally disabled sister fueled the fire that was already ignited. Her spirit of love and acceptance continues to inspire and empower me. My resilience now looks nothing like survival and more like a force to be reckoned with.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m the founder of Becoming Bold, LLC, and my work is all about helping people reclaim their voice, their confidence, and their sense of self after years—sometimes decades—of shrinking themselves to fit the world’s expectations. I coach leaders, teams, and individuals to communicate with clarity, navigate conflict with courage, and lead with the philosophy of feeling the fear and doing it anyway. I also run a women’s group coaching program, Women Becoming Bold, and host the Embrace Your Inner Boldness podcast.
What excites me most is watching someone realize they don’t have to ask permission to be themselves anymore. That moment of ‘Oh… I can do this’ never gets old and keeps me going.
This year has been full of new things—my upcoming recorded mini-course, Becoming Bold Bootcamp, launches later this year, and my book, Who Do You Think You Are?, is in the works. Both are built to help people unlearn the programming that’s been holding them back and step into their boldest selves. I’m also teaming up with a colleague to create a women’s empowerment & wellness workshop that blends confidence coaching, mindfulness practices, and intentional self-care—something that will leave women feeling grounded, energized, and unstoppable.
If there’s one thing I’d want people to know about Becoming Bold, it’s that this work isn’t fluffy motivation—it’s real, raw, messy and meant to create lasting change. Whether it’s in a boardroom, classroom, on a stage, or through a podcast episode, my mission is to help people remember who they were before the world told them who to be—and to live boldly, every day.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three things that have shaped my journey more than anything are resilience, optimism, and hope.
Resilience is what kept me standing when life could have flattened me for good. It’s not about being unshakable, it’s more about knowing you can be shaken and have the strategies to come back even stronger. The best way to build it is to practice getting back up after the little setbacks, so when the big ones come, you already know you’re capable.
Optimism is what helps me keep my eyes on possibility instead of just the problem. I don’t pretend everything’s fine, I intentionally look for what’s still good, what’s still working, and what can be done next that’s in my power. You can grow optimism by noticing and naming, and REALLY appreciating three things every day that are going right, even when life feels heavy.
Hope is my fuel. It’s the quiet, steady belief that there’s something worth moving toward. Without it, even the strongest people lose their way. Protect your hope like it’s a rare and precious resource—feed it with inspiring stories, people who lift you, and environments that make you believe in what’s possible.
If you’re early in your journey, start with your mindset. Skills and knowledge will always matter, but the way you think, what you choose to believe and the intentional sentences you speak will carry you through everything.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
Ooh, this is SUCH a powerful question and I’m so glad you asked. Since my sister’s passing this topic has been SUCH a motivator for me. I often think of the lyric from “Heavy Dirty Soul” by the band Twenty One Pilots that goes, “Death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit”. Goosebumps just saying that out loud. We tend to live as though we’ve got forever, and I think that can actually really hold us back from so many things!
If I knew I only had a decade of life left, I’d continue doing what I’m doing, but maybe a little more aggressively. I’d publish my book tomorrow, I’d finish drafting my keynote speech today, and I’d much more aggressively pursue opportunities to help change peoples’ lives. I’d get in front of as many people as I could to share my story of resilience, hope, optimism, and overcoming; ultimately illuminating the path for others who are on it right now. Helping those who feel alone in what they’re going through, ashamed of things they’ve done while in survival mode, being afraid to open up about the things they don’t talk about for fear of judgment. I’d walk alongside the woman who doesn’t know who she is anymore because she gave so much of herself away, in fear of being rejected, abandoned or neglected.
Basically, I’d do what I’m doing now, but with an incredibly higher sense of urgency. You’ve really given me some food for thought on this question, haven’t you?!
