Meet Rinku Kapur

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rinku Kapur a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Rinku , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.” — Mary Anne Radmacher
“I think my resilience comes from a mix of life experiences and the people who’ve supported me along the way. I’ve learned that setbacks are part of the process, and each one has made me a little stronger.”
“My resilience comes from maintaining perspective and focusing on growth. Challenges are inevitable, but I see them as opportunities to learn, adapt, and keep moving forward.”

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Hi, I’m Rinku Kapur — the proud owner and Certified Instructor at the Kumon Math & Reading Centre of Monroe.
Feel free to drop by sometime — I’d love to meet you and show you around! Call me crazy, but working with kids and being a part of their learning journey is one of my greatest joys. For me, it’s never just about Math and English — it’s about nurturing confident, independent, and curious young minds.
I feel incredibly grateful to hold this baton — the opportunity to impact so many families by laying a strong educational foundation for their children, starting from the elementary level, is a gift I don’t take lightly.
My journey into Kumon began over a decade ago, right after having my younger child. It was actually my children who inspired it all. When my elder one turned four, I enrolled him in the Kumon Program. Within just a few months, I saw such a positive transformation in him that I was blown away by how effective the Kumon method was. My curiosity was instantly sparked — and when it comes to learning, I’m as curious as a cat (you should know that about me!). And just like that, this incredible voyage began.
Before this, I worked in both corporate companies and startups, where I discovered my passion lies in building something meaningful from the ground up. That same spark is what I feel every time I get to shape a child’s learning journey.
A few fun facts about me:
• I’m an HR professional at heart — a true people person.
• I thrive on spontaneity — overthinking isn’t my style (and I don’t let my boys do it either!).
• I’m a certified ICF Life Coach, which has deepened my empathy and perspective in countless ways.
• I’m a total bookworm. If you don’t find me at the Kumon Center, you’ll probably spot me at the local library!
• I’m a movie buff and love sneaking in a good film whenever I can.
• “Impossible” isn’t in my vocabulary — cliché or not, I truly believe that. Try me.
Giving back is where my heart truly lies. I love contributing to our community in any way I can. We’ve partnered with local schools and hospitals on various initiatives — from cooking at the Ronald McDonald House to participating in the Tricky Tray with the school district, and even hosting fun events like the Ice Cream Social with Barclay Brook School. We also regularly fundraise for causes close to our hearts — last year, we proudly raised $5,000 for one of our supported charities.

I invite you to join us at the next initiative!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities in my journey were: resilience, adaptability, and emotional intelligence.
Resilience helped me push through uncertainty, setbacks, and moments of self-doubt. It’s the quiet strength that keeps you moving when things don’t go to plan.
Advice: Resilience is built over time. Start by getting comfortable with discomfort—whether that’s through taking on stretch projects, facing feedback head-on, or simply staying the course when things get tough. Reflecting on challenges afterward helps you recognize your own growth.
Adaptability allowed me to navigate change, whether it was shifting roles, learning new skills, or responding to unexpected challenges.
Advice: Stay curious and open to learning. Don’t get too attached to a single path or plan—industries, tools, and expectations evolve fast. The more you practice adjusting, the more confident you’ll feel in new or ambiguous situations.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) was key in building relationships, navigating team dynamics, and leading with empathy. It often mattered just as much—if not more—than technical skills.
Advice: Invest time in self-awareness. Notice how you react under stress, how you respond to others, and how your communication lands. Asking for feedback and observing leaders you admire can accelerate this.

Ultimately, it’s not about being perfect in these areas—it’s about being intentional and consistent. Small efforts made consistently over time build into real strength.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

The Monk who sold his Ferrari. I came across this book during a difficult period in my life. Its title immediately caught my eye and drew me in. While the insights it offers aren’t entirely new, the author’s unique and engaging presentation really resonated with me, inspiring me to try out the simple tips shared throughout.
Reading it helped ground me and gave me a renewed sense of purpose. The emphasis on self-awareness and self-care made me realize how shifting my perspective could completely transform the way I viewed the world.

Here are a few key nuggets from the book:
“The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your thoughts.”
Your mind is like a garden—tend it with positive, purposeful thoughts, and weed out the negativity. You become what you think about most.
Embrace Purpose
“The purpose of life is a life of purpose.”
Clarify your goals, align your actions with your values, and live each day intentionally. Without purpose, success can feel empty.
Kaizen (Continuous Self-Improvement)
“Push yourself to do more and to experience more.”
Constantly strive to grow, learn, and evolve—whether through reading, reflection, or challenges. Small daily improvements lead to long-term transformation.
Cultivate Discipline
“Wage war against the weaker thoughts that have crept into the palace of your mind.”
Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments. Build rituals that support your well-being and priorities.
Respect Time
“Time slips through our hands like grains of sand, never to return.”
Time is your most valuable resource—guard it wisely. Prioritize what truly matters and avoid distractions.
Serve Others
“The most noble thing you can do is to give to others.”
True fulfillment often comes from lifting others, not just chasing personal success.
