Meet Sheena Chickering

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sheena Chickering. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sheena below.

Sheena, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

It’s definitely a work in progress—some days are better than others. What’s helped me most is staying grounded in my integrity and self-worth. I’ve learned that the way I treat myself, especially how I speak to myself, makes a huge difference. Self-talk is powerful, and I make a conscious effort to keep it kind, supportive, and loving. Over time, that inner voice has become more of an ally than a critic.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is Sheena Chickering, and I’m a hairstylist based in the Baltimore, Maryland area. With over 15 years of experience in the industry, I specialize in helping clients look and feel like the most authentic version of themselves.

What I truly love about my work is the opportunity for transformation—whether it happens gradually over time or in bold, decisive steps. For me, hairstyling is a form of self-expression, and I’m passionate about guiding people through that journey.

What excites me most is helping individuals express who they really are through their appearance. It’s not just about listening to what they want—it’s about understanding what they’re communicating on a deeper level. What sets my work apart is my ability to identify the key features that need attention and focus on the subtle details that bring their vision to life.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three qualities that have had the greatest impact on my journey are consistency, tenacity, and adaptability.

Consistency has helped me build both discipline and self-trust. There’s an artistry in showing up and doing the everyday, seemingly mundane tasks—they’re like the mortar that holds everything together. That steady effort creates a solid foundation for the bigger vision I’m working toward. As one of my favorite artists says, “Gotta get the roots ‘fore you get the fruit.” That perspective has kept me grounded, especially during times when resistance feels strongest.

Tenacity has been essential in pushing through challenges, and adaptability has allowed me to pivot when things inevitably don’t go as planned. These qualities together have helped me stay the course and continue evolving.

My advice for anyone just beginning their journey is this: make sure that whatever you choose to pursue aligns with your personal integrity. When your path reflects who you are at your core, it becomes much easier to stay committed, even when things get tough.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

Atomic Habits has been an instrumental book in my personal and professional growth. It really emphasized the importance of building strong systems, the power of getting just 1% better every day, and how much our environment influences our habits. I’m all for anything that helps me work smarter, not harder—and this book delivers on that. One of the biggest takeaways for me was realizing that when I commit to creating systems that truly work, I free up valuable mental space and energy. Instead of feeling weighed down and distracted by constant decision-making, I’m able to stay focused and move forward with greater clarity and purpose.

It also deepened my understanding of consistency by illustrating the compounding effects of even the smallest actions—how getting 1% better (or worse) each day adds up significantly over time. That perspective helped me recognize just how impactful each micro decision can be.

Finally, learning about the role environment plays in shaping behavior was a game-changer. I’ve started intentionally designing my surroundings to support a more effective workflow, and it’s made a real difference. This book has added tremendous value to both my mindset and daily routine.
