An Inspired Chat with Nikita Gupta

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Nikita Gupta . Check out our conversation below.

Hi Nikita, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yes, one of the greatest joys lately has been not only helping incredible authors bring their books to life, but also creating a new children’s book of my own: My Colorful World.

What started as a dream has grown into a story that’s resonating with so many families; especially those who have long searched for books that reflect the beauty of multicultural and South Asian interracial experiences.

To see the spark of joy, the excitement, and even the relief in readers who finally feel seen on the page… it’s humbling, it’s powerful, and it reminds me why stories matter.

Because every child deserves to open a book and recognize themselves in its pages.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Absolutely! My name is Nikita Gupta, and I’m the creator of Growing Up Gupta, a multicultural lifestyle brand and digital magazine dedicated to celebrating interracial love, multicultural families, and the beauty of blending cultures. What makes my work unique is that it’s deeply personal. My husband is Indian, I’m African American, and together with our children, we’ve been navigating the joys and challenges of building a life that honors both of our heritages.

Through my brand, books, and community, I aim to give voice and visibility to multicultural and South Asian interracial families who too often feel unseen. From children’s books like My Colorful World, Mixed South Asians: The Coloring Book, and I Love Masala Me to relationship resources and cultural storytelling, everything I create is rooted in representation, authenticity, and love.

Right now, I’m especially excited about the release of Part Two of My Colorful World, a story that has been three years in the making. It dives even deeper into the beauty and complexity of multicultural family life, reminding readers that while cultures may clash at times, love and understanding can always create common ground.

At its core, my work is about showing that every culture, every love story, and every family deserves to be celebrated.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
It’s hard to name just one because multiple relationships have shaped the way I see myself. First and foremost, my parents laid the foundation: instilling values, resilience, and a deep sense of identity. Then, my relationship with my husband has been transformative, teaching me the beauty and challenges of blending cultures and reminding me every day that love is as much about growth and compromise as it is about joy. And, of course, becoming a mother has completely reshaped my perspective. My kids push me to see the world through their eyes, to embrace curiosity, and to create a future where they feel seen, celebrated, and limitless. Each of these relationships continues to shape me in powerful, evolving ways.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there have been times when I felt like giving up. Building something rooted in passion isn’t easy, and there were moments when the challenges felt overwhelming. But then, right when I needed it most, I’d receive a message from someone sharing how the blog/magazine touched their life or helped them feel seen. Those reminders keep me going. And I have to give credit to my husband, too, because he’s been the steady voice pushing me through fear and doubt, reminding me of the purpose behind what I do.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’d say the public version of me is real. Yet it’s not the whole me. What I share through my brand, my books, and my magazine is genuine: my love for multicultural families, my passion for representation, and my belief in the power of storytelling. But like anyone, there are layers of me that don’t always make it into the public eye: the vulnerable moments, the struggles, the quiet reflections. The version you see publicly is authentic but also curated to inspire, uplift, and connect with others. The private me is still there, navigating fears, growth, and everyday life, but both sides make me who I am.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What light inside you have you been dimming?
The light I’ve dimmed the most is my own voice. For years, I held back, whether it was fear of not being accepted, of being “too much,” or of making others uncomfortable by speaking my truth as a Black woman in an interracial marriage. I sometimes quieted my creativity, boldness, or ideas so they would “fit” into spaces not designed for me.

But I’ve realized that dimming that light doesn’t serve me, my family, or the community I’m trying to uplift. My stories, perspective, and creativity are not only valid, they’re necessary. So I’m learning to let that light shine fully, without apology.
