An Inspired Chat with Katrina Scott of Houston

We recently had the chance to connect with Katrina Scott and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Katrina, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Prayer and talking to God first before anything.

Do my daily personal hygiene routine and getting ready to start my day.

I check my calendar for any meetings and check my Emails. I respond to all customer emails that may have came in after business hours the day before.

Once those things are done I’m on my way to a meeting or the warehouse to start my work day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the Founder and CEO of Shades of Melanin Hair which is a registered ®️ business founded in 2019.

We offer Raw Hair Extensions, Wigs and more to Women. We are unique due to what we offer as in Salt and Pepper Collection for older women. A collection that is very popular and trending.

We test our products quarterly to be sure the high quality remains and no shortcuts are being taken by the vendor we use which is 3. Each of our vendors carry something unique that caters to what I want to offer for my customers.

Before opening we tested over 50 vendors and chose the best 3 for different products we offer.

We offer unique and affordable pieces as well as our extraordinary customer service.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mother. She always told me that I can do and be whatever I wanted to be. She always push me and rooted me on even in my business. It was days I would talk to her and felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere and questioning God.

She kept saying, your time is coming. Be patient! Then send my scriptures, sermons to listen to. She would even order something from my website to make me feel better. But then I would call her and say, Momma don’t buy anything I’ll give it to you.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
How to be patient. When you want something to happen now and it doesn’t. God comes on his timing not ours. And it’s a reason for this. He could be keeping you from danger, bad people or anything. And I want everything and I mean everything to happen according to his word. I want God to always order my steps. It may take longer but he eventually gets me through and better than I ask for.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Of course! Most definitely. I can only be me and will always be me. I really don’t know how to fake my life. Either you like me for me or move around.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m spending time with my family. I’m very big on family values and family time. We always have a damn good time.

And my grandchildren is a different type of love that runs deep. I love when they come spend time with us.

Creating memories. You can’t never get your loved ones back once they’re gone.
