We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kym Nicole Oubre. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Kym Nicole, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What battle are you avoiding?
Wow! This question makes me a little nervous.
The battle I’m avoiding is stepping out from behind perfection. I’ve spent years helping others feel flawless, yet with my own artistry, I fear being judged–especially since I’ve felt that criticism from people closest to me. So, at times, I play it safe, even though the truth is, I’m winging it…I’m still figuring it out as I go. I’m learning to show up scared, and imperfect, and to believe I’m worthy of love not for what I do, but simply for who I am.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My Name is Kym Nicole Oubre. I’m a celebrity makeup artist, author, confidence coach, and the founder of The Glam Precinct, a beauty brand built on the belief that every woman has the right to feel glammed and gorgeous. I’ve spent over 20 years working in the beauty industry– starting as a hairstylist and later moving into television and film as a makeup artist–transforming faces and telling stories through artistry. Beyond artistry, my passion has always been teaching women how to embrace their beauty with confidence. What makes my brand unique is that it’s not about products or makeup– it’s about self worth, self expression, and giving women permission to shine in their own way. Right now, I’m focused on growing The Glam Precinct, creating new educational programs, and continuing to share my messages through writing. my first book, A little Makeup Can’t Hurt, explored how beauty and self-esteem connect, and my most recent book, The Power of Self-Worth, goes even deeper into helping women and young girls embrace their value. Alongside this, I’m exploring my passion for photography as another way to tell stories through beauty, confidence, and self expression.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I won the talent show in elementary school by performing a poem about Harriet Tubman. In that moment, I realized I was talented, I was good at performing, and I wasn’t afraid to stand in front of my peers – that I could do anything I set my mind to. It taught me that it was okay to feel proud of myself without being conceited or ‘too much’. I still chase and honor that feeling today, especially because in my adolescent and young adult years, so much of that confidence and belief in myself was stripped away. That memory reminds me of the little girl in me who was fearless – and she still deserves space to shine.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be this: This is not the end for you. You have such a beautiful spirit, a kind soul, and a spark that will return one day – brighter than ever. I know you’ve been made to believe you’re ugly, disposable, and unworthy of love, but none of that is true. You are beautifully and wonderfully made, one of a kind, When you forget, remember this: your self-worth, your beauty, and your presence are not up for debate. You are enough, no matter what anyone says or does to make you feel small.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
People often assume that I’m bold and glamorous all the time, but the truth is, I don’t even wear makeup everyday and I usually dress pretty comfortably. I’m actually soft-spoken, easy-going, and very low fuss. I often joke with friends that when I do step out, I’m ‘transforming into my other self’ – the glamorous version of Kym Nicole people expect to see. The biggest, boldest, thing about me in everyday life is really my hair. I keep it short and blonde with a little red heart on my temple. It’s become my signature, and it draws attention before I even say a word. Online, I don’t mind leaning into that glam perception, but in person people are usually surprised by how different I am – in the best way. Most of the time, they end up liking the “real” me even more.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I grew up in a strict environment with clear expectations of how girls should behave – quiet, responsible, and self-sacrificing. By the time I was 16, I stepped into my rebel era and began questioning those rules. Choosing a career in beauty became my first act of defiance, even though some doubted it would take me far. I had to walk through seasons of low self-worth and disbelief in myself , but those struggles became the foundation of my purpose. Today, I know I am not living as who I was told to be – I am living as who I was born to be, helping women and young girls reclaim their confidence, their voice and their worth.
