Meet Jen Hershey

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jen Hershey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jennifer below.

Jen, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I absolutely love this question! As a therapist and business owner, I constantly find myself seeking resilience in various aspects of my life. My take on resilience is that it’s all about self-love and compassion. It’s about tapping into those nurturing parts of yourself and becoming your own biggest cheerleader, mother, and supporter. We certainly need support from our family, friends, and community, but the true gift lies in reconnecting with our ability to cultivate nurturting within ourselves.

So, let me break it down for you in my own experience. Picture this: I’m launching a therapy app right now, and boy, does it stir up a whirlwind of emotions within me! It’s that one thing I can point to and say, “This is what makes me feel all the things.” When self-doubt starts creeping in, I catch those negative thoughts or moments and imagine responding to myself in the most nurturing way imaginable. You know what I’d do? I’d give myself a big, warm hug and say, “I am so incredibly proud of all you’ve accomplished and all the amazing things you’ll continue to achieve.” I feel into the warm sensation in my chest and it helps me move through my fears because it is the opposing force. It’s those little acts of self-care and surrounding myself with heaps of compassion that keep me going. It will be an ongoing process and is difficult at times but it feels like I’ve cracked the code in some way.

Resilience also runs deep in my family roots. My grandparents were immigrants who ventured to America, and their incredible strength and spirit made a huge impact on me. They had their own entrepreneurial mindset and that drive to challenge the status quo and make something different. They have now passed, but I still stay grounded in the roots they have created, especially when I need some extra support.

So, in a nutshell, my resilience comes from both nurturing myself with compassion and drawing strength from the remarkable resilience of my family heritage. It’s a beautiful combination that helps me face life’s challenges head-on and keep moving forward, no matter what.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I would love to share with you what I do and what makes it so exciting and special. I am a licensed therapist who understands the importance of providing women with access to specialists and resources. Nowadays, with pop culture getting a grip on psychology, it’s crucial to avoid misunderstandings and potential harm, such as misdiagnoses or the tendency to label everyone as a narcissist. That’s where I come in!

But my mission doesn’t stop there. I’m also dedicated to helping therapists prevent burnout, expand their reach, and diversify their income. We need these incredible professionals to stay in the field and build sustainable ways of living. And most importantly, I understand how to walk the delicate line of creating mental health resources without compromising the therapeutic experience’s value and authenticity.

I want to be your trusted mental health resource—the one who confidently says, “I’m a great therapist, but that’s not my area of specialization.” Rest assured, though, because I have the perfect therapist for you who truly understands your specific needs. And guess what? I can even help you solve your problem right now!

And that’s how I came up with How We Get Thru, our extraordinary mental wellness subscription app. This app is designed to help you navigate life’s everyday stresses without falling down the never-ending Google rabbit hole.

Our flexible subscriptions offer you access to real mental health professionals exactly when and where you need them. Struggling to find a therapist? Give our directory a try and explore therapists’ courses to discover how they can assist you with your specific challenges.

What makes our app truly remarkable is that it empowers you to cope with your life as it is right now. All our 30 minute courses are available in audio, video, and text formats, providing you with learning options tailored to your unique lifestyle. Also, each course includes reflection questions to help you implement the changes you need in your life. And that’s not all—we even have a journal section to jot down any additional thoughts that arise during your course journey. You can finally get the guidance you need to get thru motherhood, relationships, and burnout.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I reflect on the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have profoundly impacted my journey. The first is introspection, which has been instrumental in cultivating self-awareness. It involves delving deep into how our actions and presence affect others, understanding our emotions on a profound level, and recognizing our own needs. These crucial questions enable us to establish our current position and pave the way for our desired destination.

The second quality that has been immensely impactful for me is observation. It complements introspection by providing a neutral perspective, without judgments or labels. Instead of categorizing events or experiences as good or bad, observation allows us to acknowledge them as they are, without attaching meaning or limitations. Even positive evaluations can inadvertently restrict us, as we may feel like we can only excel in one area or define ourselves solely by one skill. Learning to observe things unfolding, including our own emotions and actions, liberates us to explore and create freely.

Finally, the third quality that has been crucial in my journey is action. Previously, I often sidelined myself, hesitating to take the steps necessary to express my thoughts, pursue my goals, or embrace new experiences. However, this changed when I recognized the significance of taking action. By being introspective and observing, the fear and impossibility surrounding action dissipated, making it easier for me to embark on new endeavors. This quality has been pivotal in my journey, propelling me forward in launching an app and continuing my personal growth.

For those early in their own journey, my advice is to embrace introspection, observation, and action. These qualities can have a profound impact on your growth and development. Take time to deeply understand yourself and your impact on others, acknowledging your emotions and needs. Cultivate the ability to observe without judgment, freeing yourself from the constraints of predefined notions of success or limitations. Finally, bravely take action, allowing your newfound self-awareness and observations to guide your path. The possibilities for personal growth are boundless.
