We recently had the chance to connect with Yvonne Rakestraw and have shared our conversation below.
Yvonne , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Absolutely. In fact, this moment right here makes me incredibly proud. It’s a full-circle moment to be recognized and share my story and even brought a few tears followed by laughter. Another recent moment, I applied to a pitch competition and found out I wasn’t selected. Instead of letting the rejection break me, I responded with grace, gratitude, and professionalism. It reminded me how much I’ve grown as an entrepreneur and as a woman. A few years ago, I might’ve taken it personally or let it shake my confidence. But now? I see every “no” as a setup for the right “yes.”
It’s in these moments, when you can laugh through the sting, keep your head high, and keep building, that you realize how far you’ve come. That makes me proud.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Yvonne — founder of Eleven 21 Mixology, where we believe cocktails are more than drinks… they’re an experience. What started as a mobile bartending service has grown into a lifestyle brand that hosts mixology classes, luxury events, and unforgettable themed experiences like our signature Murder & Mixology series.
What makes Eleven 21 special is the way we blend creativity, connection, and community. Whether we’re behind the bar or curating an immersive event, we show up with intention, elegance, and a little bit of fun. We serve more than cocktails — we serve confidence, culture, and celebration.
We’re also deeply committed to legacy: we empower and educate the next generation of bartenders through hands-on training, certification, and mentorship that builds skill, confidence, and opportunity.
Right now, we’re working on expanding our brand, launching a new storefront, and continuing to create spaces where people can unwind, connect, and toast to something beautiful. I’m proud of how far we’ve come, and even more excited about where we’re going.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Such a thoughtful and deep question.
What breaks the bonds between people and what restores them?
I’ve noticed that what breaks bonds is often silence—unspoken expectations, unhealed wounds, or unexpressed truths. Miscommunication, ego, and lack of empathy can quietly erode even the strongest connections over time. Sometimes it’s not what’s said, but what’s not said that creates the greatest distance.
But what restores those bonds? Honesty. Vulnerability. Grace. When people are willing to listen with an open heart, take accountability, and extend compassion, healing becomes possible. Bonds are rebuilt through shared experiences, difficult conversations, and a willingness to see each other fully, even in the messy parts.
At the end of the day, it’s love, active and intentional love, that holds us together.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell her: You’re not too much. You’re just early.
That big heart, those wild dreams, that fire in your spirit… it all makes sense later. Don’t shrink to fit into rooms that weren’t built for your kind. Trust your instincts, protect your peace, and know that the version of you you’re becoming is so proud of how far you’ve come.
You’re not behind. You’re not broken. You’re blooming.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the bartending and events industry is that success is only about flashy drinks or the perfect Instagram moment. The truth is, longevity in this business comes from professionalism, hospitality, and genuine connection — not just aesthetics.
Another lie is that bartending isn’t a “real career.” I’ve seen it change lives, open doors, and create generational opportunities. When you invest in skill, training, and service, it’s a profession with real power and purpose.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think some people might assume my legacy is just about cocktails and events — but it’s so much bigger than that. Eleven 21 Mixology isn’t just about serving drinks; it’s about serving opportunity. It’s about creating spaces where people feel seen, celebrated, and connected. It’s about empowering and educating the next generation of bartenders so they can build their own futures.
The drinks are the doorway, but the real legacy is the impact — the people whose lives and careers are changed because they crossed paths with me and my business. Long after the last toast, that’s what will still matter.
